Help. Noob here. Was doing fine until I found...

Recommended Posts

Started playing yesterday on Steam.  LOVE this game.

Anyways... thought I was making good progress, made it to 14 days,

then all my food became cursed.  No longer rabbit meat, but monster meat. (black rabbits now)

I believe this started when I found a gold ring surrounded by evil flowers and

took it.  Everything got a lot more haunted at that point.

Should I have just left the ring where I found it?

Is this ring the cause of my woes?

What is the cure for this condition should it happen again?

Thanks Watcha!  I just resorted to the Wiki while you were replying, but I'm trying not to spoil the game for myself.

Just read about sanity and Beardlings.  Live and learn.  Or... die and learn.  Time to start over again.

Your woes and hauntedness come from your mind, my friend. Be MINDFUL of the brain meter that represents sanity. Some things raise it, some things lower it. Try and figure out what does what! (Besides that, you already probably know a few due to the responses on the forums)

I can guarantee that if you use the wiki too much you'll completely defeat the purpose of playing the game. You've been warned!

Certain things (I won't detail what for discovery, but it's likely if it's Dusk/Night, Monster, or Evil related) lower Sanity.

When Bunnies (actually "Jackalopes") are viewed after your sanity lowers past a certain point (different character have different thresholds,) they  "become" "Beardlings." Instead of dropping the simple Morsels, they now have a chance to drop Monster Meat (a 40% chance,) Nightmare Fuel (a 40% chance,) or Beard Hair (a 20% chance and the only way other characters Besides Wilson get Beard Hair to build something Magical.....)

Raising your Sanity (again, discovery, but picking flowers, eating certain Crock Pot Foods and finding out how to Sleep help,) negates these "monstrous" effects and stops the Nightmares from (eventually) attacking. Then again, if your Sanity Lowers enough for THEM to attack, you can attack them back just like any other monster and (besides them giving a little Sanity back, follow the steps to restore sanity highly recommended when done with them,) they may drop something useful.   Just remember to protect yourself and fight THEM like any other monster (and some Nightmares may be harder than others.)

Good work surviving so long as a new player! Keep it up and welcome to the forums!

Just get your sanity back up no the ring is not cursed but those evil flowers do make your sanity drop like crazy.

Hey mate. Have a read of my guide. It has sections on increasing and decreasing sanity, how to manage resources etc...

A few things:

To ensure you have a high chance of producing honey ham you need to add a meat value of 3 along with at least one honey.

The meat value total is 2, not 3. Anything less makes honey nuggets.

(For all readers on this board, not necessary for the guide--This can be done with one monster meat and one meat, one monster meat or meat and (any combination of 2 of these: frog's legs, morsels, small jerky, drumsticks [best saved for turkey dinners however.])

Making a heat stonewinter hat and a dapper vest are essential...

... Both the winter hat and dapper vest have a durability of 10 days (meaning you may need to make two to last the remaining five days). However they provide good boosts to sanity compared to other winter clothing and the resources required to make them are far easier to obtain.

in your first winter?!

A dapper vest requires EIGHT hound's teeth and SIX silk. Mosty people won't get that amount of teeth from several hound's attacks, unless they are attacked by 4 Ice hounds and all drop teeth.

I'd rather use a tent or sleeping roll (as long as I stocked up on enough food for the winter.) 6 Silk and 3 rope is much more reasonable to do than eight hounds teeth and six silk twice As you said in the guide, it can be used 6 times which is plenty for the first winter.

As a matter of fact, if you're not told it's too low, what you can do is at dusk/night, gather the food you'd normally eat (but don't eat it yet,) sleep, and immediately eat it the next morning even if starving and beginning to lose health.

(This is why it's recommended in the guide having an ice box and multiple crock pots so you can stockpile for winter those high value foods such as honey ham which restore a lot of hunger and help health. 1 monster meat, 2 morsels from rabbits and 1 honey will do it, why if you can have at least one bee box and 6-12 flowers set up several days or more before winter it becomes much easier to survive winter with harvested honey. Plus, you can make taffy and Pumpkin cookies in the crock pot which restores 15 sanity per food if you have extra honey that first season.)

And if you're trying to get a sanity regaining item that is easy to make, a Top hat is higher priority. Not only does it take just 5 silk, it is a required component of the Presdihatitator.

How to DECREASE SANITY?

I have found that the fastest way to lower your sanity is to stand next to a boss type monster. Tree guards are probably the best and easiest way, as long as you know what you are doing. What you need is a good supply of pine corns and an axe. Simply start chopping away at trees until one spawns.

When it does spawn. start planting pine corns close by, this will cause the tree guard to calm down and idly start to walk around. Now simply stand next to it and watch as your sanity drops. Once you have a tree guard spawned this is by far the best method. However you do run the risk of wasting time if one does not spawn, but in my experience yes it will take some time maybe 2-3 days of chopping trees, but it does spawn and once it does you have a permanent method of having the choice to reduce your sanity.

The easiest and safest way to decrease sanity is to stand on evil flowers and wait.

Not recommend in winter due to the wait.

Since the introduction of the totally normal tree, finding evil flowers is much simpler than chopping trees for days until you get the 1.33% chance of spawning one and most new players don not know what they are doing to avoid combat.

Planting pine cones pacifies the treeguard and they go to a tree state until that time expires or the game is reloaded THEN they walk around un-hostile. and heaven forbid you need to chop wood there or they get very angry again.

Again, not something a new player would know.

The most easiest way would be to find some evil flowers and just stand near them. This is the safest way but in my opinion boring, still the outcome is the same but it takes longer.

For a new player, boring=surviving. Let the more advanced player run around with bosses to drop sanity if they want.

You're lucky. The way I see it, once you know how to deal with everything, the game is over shortly after.

I just hate being confused. The feeling sucks, the only thing I haven't spoiled for myself is the ruins, and a bit of the crock pot recipes.

Plus, I like the aspect of seeing how long I can survive, it isn't just seeing new things that is fun.

I'm kind of the same. I like to find some things out myself, but I hate suprises. I know the different types of enemies and such, but not all the details about them. I also enjoy seeing how long I can survive - especially after gettings mods to make the game harder. Don't Starve is one of the only games I'm actually good at. I've given my own custom character 60 health, 100 sanity, 100 hunger(ad it drains twice as fast), and a special hallucination that's twice as strong as the terrorbeak just to make the game harder.

I'm going to try to code a character when I get home from my vacation. I pretty much know how to do everything, I just need the time. It will be awesome, and since I haven't unlocked Wes, I need to make a hard character.

How about an "Urban Kirby" like your image?

(Wait, doesn't start with w, make that "Wirby")
