Aint I lucky?

Well, in that case, i don't see why you need to kill them, just pacify them, and since there aren't any trees around that area, you wont provoke them again unless you attack them or cut down a tree around them.

actually, there are trees in the area, there is a forest just off the screen - _ - but I suppose I could try to lure them further away so they wont be a problem in the future.

The Totally Normal Trees make having to fight Lierf(s) not immediately required. Useful but not immediately required.

But if you do wish to fight them, taking them to a place like multiple spiders' nests, a pig village and/or a Killer Bee zone easier. If you found one, I especially like the latter. Not only do they generate enough enemies (killer bees) to kill multiple ones, but you can go smash the Killer Bees' Hive while they are occupied.

If you don't have that, the location where a group of normal hives can work. Just smack them both once, (bring stuff for a journey if it will take a while to)  lure them there, and hit several hives (two or more depending on your abilities,) running the killer bees away from you but near the Treeguards. When they give up, the proximity will make some attack them, and the resulting smackdown by Liefs will cause the others to join in. Bonus: free stingers and Honey (and if you have a net, an easy way to get your bee box going by killing the emptied hives, then catch stray bees from other hives remaining.)

As you can guess, I've used this method (both ways) before successfully.

I'd consider myself lucky having 2 TreeGuards close to my camp! They are pretty useful for dealing with the hounds and spiders for example. :D

They stop being aggressive towards you once they've fought against anything else (as long as you don't go to stand on their toes - well, roots, whatever..)

But if you don't want their free guard services, lead them to a pig village or trick them to fight a herd of anything.

Pacify one with cones, then use a fire staff and Tooth Traps one by one. Hit them with a fire staff once or twice first to bring their health down some and also to pick which one you want to aggro to you. Then lead it into your hound trap corridor. I have 20 to 30+ tooth traps in there at all times and the treeguard will hit every one. Takes them out without even having to kite.

When you use the fire staff, be sure to hit them in that barren area so as they walk about burning, they don't set stuff on fire.

BTW, I often like to have one or two wandering around, ideally a screen or two away from my base so I can kite other mobs into them.
