In second winter

No mod and default setting world except Deerclops sets more. The reason is I want the Eyeball as fast as possible in first winter to craft the Houndius. The deerclop usually appear in the third or fourth winter on default setting.

Counter deerclop is even comfortable than hounds, I belive.

My WX78 still haven't unlock all items especially late items like Magic set or Ancient because my aim is underground living. I have to passed many redundant, unecessary steps and focus to basic survival needs. In my previous world as Wickerbottom I started live in ruins at about day 200 and die by some stupid mistakes. So I decide improve it in the second try. It may be a bit luck since I found the ruin entrance in early exploration before counter any cave piders.

Here are some description of my processing:

Aboveground:

- Setup base near frog ponds.

- Find Pig village and destroy their houses, then rebuild them in my base. They are my meat and pig skin source to craft footbalhelmet.

- Make Meat effigy if can't find any Touch stone. One is enough for me.

- Kill chess monster to take gears, it's usually 8 to 9 gear after kill all of them. Gears are good health/sanity emergency source and reduce time to cook foods. My XW78 still haven't max his stats yet, his max health is about 210.

- Build 1 to 2 spider den at Mactusk camp before the first winter come, so I can have Walking cane very soon. Badluck that I stil don't have the Tam hat yet.

- Craft tooth traps to counter hounds in dusk and night. In daytime frogs protect me.

- Build sign to protect me and my base from deerclops.

Underground:

- Find bunnyman village as fast as possible and do the same thing like I did with pig village. Rebuild them and focus on rabbit puff farming. Thanks to their respawn rate time is only 1 day, unlike pig is 3 day too long.

- Enter ruins and find ponds to setup base near it, it's always near the ruins entrance. The reason is eel will be main food source after monster meat.

- Build second birdcage. My main food in underground will be bacon and eggs. It helps health and hunger, the blue mushroom will take care the rest.

- Build bunnyman army to help me against worm. I don't mind face them actually, just ignore them while exploring. If they come to my base call my neighborhood bunnies. I'm at day 60 so I have to counter 1-2 worms at a time.

- Just run away from shadow monster whenever Nightmare cycle is working.

May be I will get a new record in the third try, if I have spare time.

So yeah.

But anyways, there's a lot of people who have been living in caves for a lot more than 60 days.  I think (and correct me in I'm wrong) that @Spazmatic has a pretty good base down there.  I think TeoS has one too.

I thought it's mean how fast it is, not how long it is. Living in ruins it not hard if don't want say that it's still easy.

My previous world with Maxwell is around 150 day in ruins in total 600 days. I get bored and deleted the world.

What do you use to make Bacon and Eggs down there? Also why run when you can hide inside a Bush Hat?

75% meat from bunnymen and 100% monster meat from worms. Hunger belt is a must have too.

I tend to multitask things and the time I runs can make a lots of thing to do, like collect earthquake drops.

So yeah.

For the communism and socialism.

Those guys don't always drop meat and the worms come only once in a while. I'd suggest bringing a Spider Den down there or settle near some Depth Dwellers.

I forgot to mention the eel. They can replace meat well.

If you worried about monster meats, the amount of monster meats we can get after kill a worm is damn high.

Actually they come frequent like they are everywhere.

Sorry, Wolfgang mentality here. There's no such thing and enough food...

I assumed he had spider dens moved there too

But I forgot it's NOT fish and Eel counts as meat.

BTW, is making a bunch of signs really necessary for Deelclops, everybody?

Can't you just lure him to another outside-base area and kill him with ranged weapons/allies if you haven't unlocked the magic crafting?

But I normally get him spawning by the second or third winter and not fiddling with his rate, so perhaps I'm not familiar with really early spawning difficulties.

It don't cost much sign like that, just my foresight. Two signs cover for every a group of structure I assume.

This is actually my strategy to prevent him destroy any structures, the sign role as a dummy. What if he destroy some or all structure, or he is aggro or not isn't relative.

Out of curiosity, what is the bird cage for? Im thinking of living in ruins after successfully living in caves and planned on taking the basics except farms as there is no natural light

The bird cage (with a bird caught inside of it) converts any type of meat into eggs, including spoiling meat/eggs and (most importantly cooked) monster meat. Technically you could feed it crops for specialty seeds, but that's not likely an issue in the ruins. You could feed it eel meat however and make bacon and eggs though. Considering Honey ham requires bee box trips topside, the birdcage is likely used for this.
