Lights Out 100 days

Recommended Posts

I have been playing the preset lights out which allows eternal night for a while now and after several attempts managed to survive 100 days+.

This preset is one of the hardest setting for don't starve. Its harder than living in caves or ruins and very difficult to survive.

There are:

no pigs

no seeds

no birds so no birdcage or farms

no bees

no butterflies

The only way to make food is berries, carrots, fish from ponds, frog legs from merman, meat from walrus/koalafant and alot of monster meat. There are still tallbirds and their eggs though. But food is not the main issue. Sanity is a huge problem because you will be running around with the miner hat which means you wont have much time to wear the tophat. You will need to survive till winter to hunt Tom's shanter or else u will go insane.

I used wicklebottom as my char but i believe maxwell or willow would be easier.

With this setting, the map doesn't seem to have the things so the only way to get the gears is from ruins or graves. It does get boring after a while since there isn't much to make. My first tip for anyone trying to play this is to find a lv1 spider den first and destroy it to make 2 silk. Then craft the miner hat with the firefly u catch with the bug net and you will have an easier time. Running around with the torch has very poor visibility and doesn't last very long. A good base would be near buffalos for their meat or near ponds. If you dig up rabbit holes at night, the rabbits will come out.

You need pig skins to make a pig house. Unless you found a bunch of touchstones, that's a horrendously inefficient use of pig skins.

Breaking an existing pig house with a hammer should spawn one pig though.

The pig will be asleep and the resource is just temporary. Pengulls are also asleep and u can't make gunpowder since they dont lay eggs at nite. Everything is quite scarce and getting resources requires light so its pretty much very resource constraint way to play.

I have not met deerclops yet n i wonder if it comes at nite time. Winter is truly harsh with frozen ponds and berries don't regrow. Hunting that koalafant is your only hope of survival and hunting at nite in a dense forest with limited light is almost impossible. I had to burn so many trees down to see the footprint.

I've seen people survive a lot longer than 100 days on Lights Out.  And how did you get those ponds so close together?

Most biome has ponds close together. Going to caves in lights out is alot different since its total darkness from the start. Just getting enough resources and keeping sanity with full night from the start is hard enough. Try craft your miner hat in lights out, that alone is enough to restart a few times.

You forget that with prototyping you can keep your sanity up easily enough to get in the caves. Once you're there it's downhill as it's full of night only mobs.

Nice setting.  Happy to see some peeps still look for creating their own difficulty instead of *asking* for the game to be more difficult w/out modifying their world settings and mods!

Wow! I call that an achievement. :) I tried the lights-out, but I couldn't live long enough to make a torch. How did you manage to make a torch fast enough with Wickerbottom? I suppose it would be a lot easier to play this setting with Willow's lighter, but the challenges down the road (little food, miserably hard winter, little visibility and constant sanity drops to name a few) keep me from wanting to give this a serious attempt. Now that you've shown that it's possible, I might give it a try. :) I'm a big fan of making the game's environment harder, without necessarily increasing the number of hostile mobs. I can't quite decide what's more challenging between permawinter and permadark, but thanks for sharing your experience!

Well done. But how did you get the Tam? I thought MacTusk doesn't spawn at night?

As for some unrelated personal rambling. Personally, when I play Lights Out, I like to make added challenge - so I set it to start in winter, and set it to "Long Winter" (eternal's a bit much). I also set Deerclops to "More" and disable caves, but I set carrots and boons to "Lots" to compensate for the added difficulty. Generally I try to find the things ASAP.

I've never made it past Day 20, because Deerclops always shows up and tears me in half.

Well, if you want practice i suggest starting on the Doorway to Adventure, dying and resetting (if needed) until you first get "King of Winter" as your "first challenge." Actually my favorite one to both "get out of the way first," and to "get the winter stuff like the Cane and Tam" for my future travels.

And now, back to Lights Out. I too am wondering how you get a torch ready in time on day 1?

There should be a campfire ready when u start with this preset or have they taken it out. There should be enough grass and twigs to make a torch at the start with that fire but u need alot of torches before you can even find a spider den or start prototyping. Since its dark, you are losing like 40 sanity per day so u need to eat alot of flowers and keep searching for resources. Walrus wakes up at nite and you can hunt them. They dont roam yet till you get the wolf's attention. Since there are multiple walrus camps now, it makes it a little easier to get the shanter but trying to hunt walrus at nite in winter is not easy....

As noted I mentioned their quote for WINTER not DARKNESS.

But as I said - isn't it impossible to get the Tam in 24 hour darkness? I've never seen MacTuck come out at night.

As for starting in Winter - it's not a problem. It's getting attacked by Deerclops in pitch dark on Day 20 before I have heavy guns and armour to deal with him that's killer for me.

To get him out you have to attack the hounds that sleep outside.

Well duh to me:

I never though of (in normal games) attacking them when night and them sleeping outside so I learned something about their triggers and night.

Still wondering (for everybody) how you get light in time for Day 1 though (eg torch before Charlie?)
