Shelter!

Recommended Posts

Though I may be wrong, I don't believe there is currently a way to build yourself a shelter, and while there may or may not be other posts concerning this, I think it is important enough an issue that it needs to be discussed. We know shelters are not unknown, as the Pigs have them. So, with the amount of wood being gathered and a solid example, the character should have the capability to build himself a home, especially considering he can build pigs' homes. I just don't think it makes much sense for Wilson to be sleeping on a straw mat or waiting through the night by a campfire when he has proven he has the capability to build a shelter (this goes for all characters). A shelter would not be game breaking as it would essentially just be the exact same thing as a fire, only there would be no chance of it burning out. Also, player could sleep in their house or leave with a torch for some nighttime exploring.

Also, on the topic of sleeping and sheltering, I don't think it makes much sense for sleeping on a straw mat to be safe. You should have to set up next to a fire (or in your home), as it doesn't make sense for nothing to attack you when you're in the dark and totally vulnerable.

(P.S. Thought I should mention that when I say "shelter" I mean a house. Should have thought that through.)

I see what you're getting at here, but it seems there would have to be some form of trade off to this otherwise it'd be pretty unbalanced with the current game state. I personally find straw mats useless anyway because that wastes the entire night away which can be used for cooking or crafting to help preserve precious daylight for other tasks and this just seems like a never breaking straw mat, which is just a hardly noticeable fraction less useless.

The idea of building a cabin or cottage has come up before with people for and against it. I'm against building an instant building, akin to the pig house, for the player character. The closest I would want is something like what they have in Project Zomboid, where you use resources to build walls, floors, doors, windows, and stairs. When you construct them you place them wherever you like. Of course a light source would be essential for such a building, so either an indoor firepit or a fireplace would need to be constructed to keep the Grue at bay...

This would be the best solution as I see it.

I don't think a permanent shelter that doesn't require logs is the least bit game breaking. Let's face it, if we only ever have the exact same challenges, we're going to get really bored with the game. I say let's build a permanent shelter where we can hide from enemies and not worry about light running out....

...until the sieges start. Because housing would be a great reason to have monsters/were-boars lay siege to a permanent camp. Naturally we'd need trebuchets, ballista, etc.

I see housing as a way to kick it up to the next level.

The only way to justify something that useful would be to put a durability on it. It costs a lot of materials and every time you go inside it breaks it more and more till you have to gather matts to make a new one. The thing i enjoy about fires/torches/fuel/straw matts is you have to replace them. You can't just stationary forever (until you have farms.) In a pure survival game you should always have to at least do a tiny bit of work to keep anything up.

I agree with this topic with the recent changes since 2012.  With all the element additions, it would be nice to see some kind of lean-to that we can utilise other than sleeping under or maybe be able to stand underneath a tree to stay dry.
