When commenting on the Larger Worlds post, I suddenly thought of this, perhaps world generation options, for example.

How abundant resources such as flint, saplings, berries, rocks and things are. (baron, normal, abundant, etc)

World size (self explanatory)

Passive Creature Abundance (like the resources one, but with creatures such as Beefalo, Tallbirds, Rabbits, Pigs, Birds and things, could make it harder with less creatures)

Hostile Creature Abundance (always hostile creatures like Spiders, Tentacles and Treeguards, make it easier or harder obviously)

Island Number (well, number of islands :p)

And more options possibly if this is a good idea to the Devs, this could be a good way to make the game more or less challenging for players.

Well then you could make passive creatures such as Pigs, rabbits and stuff less common, it obviously being harder to get from day to day without those food sources, make hostiles more common maybe, make resources more scarce

I mainly jsut think there needs to be more user control, at least some, on the world generation, or other aspects of difficulty

This sounds very much like something that might come into existence further down the track. Once the game world and all the game is stable and the coding for this is able to be done.

From what I understand of world generation to give player control over certain aspects of it would mean a LOT of coding and new sub routines that had to be added. Adjusting the formula that make up our worlds without causing crashes seems... challenging.

Its an interesting idea but I think probably not one that is very achievable at the current point in time

Hmm, I dont know, I really like that the world is random and that I dont know what to expect. It means that I sometimes end up with a really really bad world with bridges that seem to go on forever, but so be it. Part of surviving is making use of what there is and I think that if they give you control of that, that the feeling of truly surviving could go away.

I kind of don't want to be able to control the game like that. Number of islands and world size is okay, but the other stuff kinda bugs me.

I think everybody should have to play the game equally.

Here's the thing mate, just because you want to play a game one way doesn't mean everyone else should, that's incredibly pretentious. I'm an avid Dwarf Fortress player, which if you don't know is basically the definition of masochism as far as games go and to be honest, it's really bleeding stupid to want to make everyone play the game the exact same way, especially in an open world game.

Just because you want to play the game that way doesn't mean everyone wants to, some people may not want to have to play the most hardcore settings of all time constantly, and will get rather bored of it, that decreases the life of a game significantly. Being able to simply make a casual game and just enjoy it for a bit is a great way to take a break of sorts from the game. The act of simply giving people more options increases the life of a game so much that baring the options out simply because you think everyone should play the game the same way is pretty stupid in my opinion.

As a more constructive note, I'd love to see options like this, maybe even take it further and add biome size, that way you can gen a world that has large sprawling mountains and swamps, but only tiny sections of forest and grassland for example.

Regarding adjusting things like grass, stones, saplings, etc; perhaps it could be a special slider for each thing, than when you increment one thing, all other things decrements accordingly.

Kinda like in the Humble Bundles, where you select who you want to give the money too.

That would be a way of having the option but not making it too easy.

You want abundant grass? Great, let's see how you manage to make tools without saplings and how you'll eat without carrots and berries.

Interesting idea and it would make challenge survival runs possible.
