Nikki Darks
I mean, yeah, DST changed over time, not really the same game it once was. And Ig some people moved on, which is completely normal. But like other people said, I was also here since almost the start of DST and I still love the game just as much as I once used to. 1 Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/171724-the-game-turned-into-a-terraria-like-and-the-original-audience-that-fell-in-love-with-it-moved-on/page/2/#findComment-1868541 Share on other sites

Keywords: Wonder, Scared, Curious. But i think it "made" you feel like that because you discovered things. And new players of the game may still feel like this, experiencing things, being scared at the deerclop, curious about how to obtain charcoal, wonder at seeing some of the cool stuff, and so on. I don't disagree about the game losing simplicity, i think it's true and some changes to try to make thing a bit less complex could go a long way, but it's also pretty much impossible to keep the original feeling on long term players without new content, anyway. Because a lot of this is tied to the novelty of the time. If going back to Don't Starve regularly was a solution to reexperiment that feeling, a lot more of the veteran would do just that. I do think a new game is a great way to reexperiment that because that will be a lot of discovery and possibly a different kind of challenge, maybe a different approach. I do think it's fair to regret the focus on big stuff, big bosses rather than other challenges (which kind, however? There are also limitations that are related to how flexible the game can be in this state, while i think DSE can allow more renevable explorations potentially, depending of the direction chosen) So i think this is interesting to see this discussion, see what people would love to face as challenges, what form it would take and such. I just do feel that if you want more of the feeling of wonder/scared/curious you need new things to feel that about, and having that on the same game means losing some of the simplicity. And of course you can't have 15 different don't starve game either. _H_
I dunno man, I played the original DS on PS3, bought DST on ps4 (like around 2017) and then again when i got the pc (around 2019, i still remember playing year of the pig with controller, totally obscene), I've been here since all the phases the game went through and while it obviusly changed the main core is still there. You could easily ignore the whole content if you would like to play the original experience, no need to find lunar island, no need to fight werepig or going into archives, no need to spend skills points, yeah you can't avoid reworks but I won't say the main soul of the game changed from white to black, is just evolving but it's still DST. 1 Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/171724-the-game-turned-into-a-terraria-like-and-the-original-audience-that-fell-in-love-with-it-moved-on/page/2/#findComment-1868552 Share on other sites
RubLog6
I think it's more of nostalgia and missing the simplicity of solo ds, at least for me. I'm not a veteran dst player by any means, only starting around may 2024, but I started with pocket ds, and I played a lot. A LOT. Like I played the heck out of it. Till I had enough of accidentally hitting random mobs by accident and losing worlds because pocket was 🤢. *Angrily makes steam account and purchases everything* Lately, I've been thinking, don't starve was truly a masterpiece of a game (I only have 180 hours on ds pc but remember, i played the heck out of it on mobile) and DST cannot take that away from DS, so I went back and played a bit in my 3 dlc world I made and had so much fun in, during a time where I felt a little burnt out from dst. After playing for some time I realised, despite the smoother movement, less delayed feeling or lag, for me at least, DST is still the better game. It can be overwhelming with the sheer amount of content and things you want to do to progress, but DS just doesn't have the many mechanics DST has. Takeaway is, take a break once in a while, touch some grass. You don't have to get the moon caller staff on day 11 or pearl by first autumn if it feels too much for you. Nor keep up to date with every single update when it rolls out. This is just as much as it is for me as it is for anyone who feels like DST is a lot to take in. Despite all that, I can understand if many want to quit or put up the occasional forum post like this one. It's also why I love Wilson and play him mostly. He reminds me of a simpler time. Nothing fancy. Nothing complicated. 1 Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/171724-the-game-turned-into-a-terraria-like-and-the-original-audience-that-fell-in-love-with-it-moved-on/page/2/#findComment-1868553 Share on other sites

As a final heads up just about every cosmetics can be earned without money excluding a few small exceptions like player made items and the game tells you how to earn things normally in the shop. At first glance dst's monetization seems better but it's far easier to spend a lot of money on dst than it is a game like Warframe which actively tries to get you to earn things yourself rather than spending money. Mike23Ua
Some of the original audience is too stubborn to move on. Just like when resident evil went from slow survival horror and puzzle solving to full blown action shooter with QuickTime events in Cutscenes, The “Original Audience” sometimes sticks around and prays they return to their roots of what they loved about the franchise originally. Im hoping that will be the case with DSE anyway.
