I guess this is for subtle hinting at Wilson's importance rather then the blatant and obvious one we had before, although I do sympathize with the the sentiment.

Nope, it won't.  The Biome is determined by the Map Layout used to create the region during World Generation. 

Basically, during World Gen, each region of the map is created using a layout.  Each of those layouts has a code name.  If you don't see that layout listed under the biome in my loot table above, then it won't be considered to be a part of that biome.  Re-turfing the ground won't ever change that.

For example, here is a graphic of the surface shard of a freshly generated world from this patch.  Each world gen map region is outlined with its layout code name in the center.

I am absolutely fascinated by this image and spent like half an hour examining it in detail. I love looking at different map generating approaches! May I ask, how did you generate this image and is there any way to access this tool for a casual player (say, via a mod)?

I was thoroughly looking at it hoping to find any pattern in ocean setpiece generation and besides Lunar Island being a part of the surface world (which is clearly shown by how biome "rooms cells" are constructed) the rest of the ocean landmarks seems to be randomly generated and placed in existing free space not occupied by anything else. 

I had an interesting experience generating a bunch of surface maps looking for a perfect megabase world, and I applied some worldgen mods to tinker with biome and setpiece placements when generating them. Once we settled down with the world we liked, I managed to re-generate an exact copy of it with two marble setpieces swapped their positions through one of the mod settings - later we found out that this tiny change in the world seed also affected every single ocean landmark position as well - all Malbatross spawners, Waterlogged, both Pearl's island and Moon Quay, Crab King, kelp shoals, Salt shoals, even boat setpieces and standalone sea stacks - everything was randomly re-shuffled and sprinkled into different places of the ocean while the outlines and other setpieces of the main land and Lunar Island stayed exactly the same.

I suppose your right. If the other two masks are suppose to represent Charlie and Maxwell (At least, that's what I believe), having the last mask be almost identical to Wilson's face kind of ruins the mystery they're planning for the 3 characters. Still, I am going to miss that dumb mask ;(

I mean what mystery? If it was maxwell charlie and wilson then it was all 3 people that were using the throne. If not then its not about them but something else so changing the mask makes  sense at it has nothing to do with wilson in that case. Lore is lore. Fun is fun. I am glad they changed it if it has no lore implication to wilson at all since it would just confuse players. Lore of this game is already complicated and there is no need to make it even harder to understand.

Except there are no changes with Mask's lore or their implications. All three masks still represent Wilson Maxwell and Charlie. The other two masks had perfect desing, meanwhile Wilson's mask was literally just Wilson's face carved in thulecite. Which I belive is the reason why they changed it.

If it had no lore Implication to Wilson in first place then Klei would have tought twice before adding the first art and quotes for the Wilson's mask. There is nothing confusing about the  lore or what masks represent. All still same people. (Still wish they kept the old art for the mask though, It was my favorite)

The problem is in most cases they dont think at all before making huge changes ( aka lunar hail not dealing dmg or fixing exploit with mimic green amulet ) which in both cases are good changes in my opinion but most players think otherwise so who am i to judge. What is confusing about the lore is murals are not openly presented anywhere so player that would love to deep dive into lore is either forced into checking youtube or dig into forums/wiki - and its the worst possible way to present lore to people. Just add new cathegory in game menu with links to all the videos murals and all lore related stuff not that hard.

also i wouldn't be so sure about wilson charlie and maxwell faces being on those masks. While only maxwell appearance stays in some way close. Charlie has no earings and the face looks weird. The third mask was changed and it doesnt look like wilson at all so i would think twice before making those theories. Also why would ancients that were worshiping the moon even make those masks? If they somehow knew about the future they would never go with the shadow way and thats what they did at the end so i hardly belive those masks show wilson charlie and maxwell.

The Devs and Writers are two diffirent teams. Developers open betas so they can test those "huge" changes before update goes live. Writers rarely do such changes in the lore.

So I doubt there was a mistake/change for the masks meaning.

I'm not doing any theories. Literally half of the character quotes suggest third mask is for Wilson. 

Not only that but quotes say the other two masks look Torn down and Angry. Which fits Maxwell and Charlies reign with Nightmare throne.

Who made them ? Idk, Maybe Charlie or maybe Ancients. But It's clear which mask is made for who. (Unless klei changes lore, Which IIRC done once.)

Possible tropes that could be followed with the mask looking like Wilson are "history repeats itself" where figures of the past can not only have roles similar to ones in the present but looks as well, or "time traveler's destiny" where going back in time to play your part is what keeps the present consistent.

Edit: another is "prophecy fulfillment", where ancients predicted events that are happening now.

Fossils were relevant to me before the devs changed the spacing between them. To fight AFW, I only need 8. So they've become pretty irrelevant.

Actually (& yes you can chalk this one up to me being a DC & Marvel Fan..)

Wanda existing in the game at all & her whole “Break All The Timelines” Gimmick COULD make Wilson the creator, which in turn: would explain why Maxwell has always despised the guy & wanted to watch him suffer, Meanwhile Wilson has no idea that’s what he Was or Will Become.

You guys really should watch more super hero movies & cartoons.. Im sure Klei had a reason why it resembled Wilson at first before the art change.

And because I know people like to make $$ I’m also highly positive the changed art design will become a skin you can buy for it. 😂

i do and this still really doesn't make this a compelling story beat because time loop stuff is so bad when done wrong and would feel forced
