for a new biome with it's theming based on being a scalding, smog filled area, i'm surprised we didn't get new turf with it. i think some new turf would do the atmosphere of the biome wonders, especially if it changes a bit when rifts are active, like ruins turf :]

I really hope they add new turf for this biome!!! It would be a great change from the rest of the caves. 
 

I also don’t think you should be able to break the volcanic vents, without them the biome is barren and the heating effect from them is a cool challenge

I also don't think they should be breakable, because then the misma from it would be irrelevant if you have a pickaxe and mine them before opening the rifts.

perhaps they could be mined to temporarily damage or collapse them, stifling the miasma but keeping the heat they give off, but ultimately they would reform after a few days or lesser.

Maybe they should regenerate while Mega Blight spawns. Like the Scrap Fences in the Junkyard.

I think you're wrong. This is just a discussion, and I don't think the developers will add them. And magma lakes don't fit this biome.
Shadow ponds would be more suitable, as they would be an indestructible spawner of something like shadow tentacles. But only during the full nightmare phase.

During the calm phase, they are safe, and you could catch a shadow fish.

And after AFF. Well, they get a random chance to change into their rift version.

Would it be better make ominous looks to prevent peaple set up bases there beforehand and then them from being destroyed by the Mega Blight after the Rift? like Dragonfly Nest.

Since the centipede boi is already part of the lore, there would be ominous footprints, crawling marks, and trail of destruction.

Along with lava caves, we could have a revival of a very ancient forgotten mechanic (I can bet I'm the only one here who knows it eheheh) when Klei was making the Ruins.

When they were first introduced, you could hammer them to provide you some lights!!! After some minutes they would close up and no light emitted.

(I'm sorry, I wanted to search proof for you, but it's now so obscure and old, I tried to find it for 40 minutes with no results....)

Klei could re-propose this mechanic where you can't at all destroy volcanic vents, temporarily damaged or collapse as you said, only disable them for X time, meaning also they will be unmovable and you need to use the level design proposed to chose which one of them to temporarily disable. Very cool! I like it, I like it! Very Don't starve-like!

infact cave lava was planned very long ago, you can still see it during the world gen animation.
