i've been wanting to make this question to a bunch of people ever since making my silly little cursor mod

in general, i like when games do it because they add a very visible UI element that can tell you when something's changed. not related to cursors, but something like doomguy's bloody mugshot genuinely helped me figure out that i was on the verge of death, multiple times. so naturally, i've always kinda wanted one for don't starve

the hover text is there, yeah, but sometimes it just helps out peeps to just have a visible icon that says "hey! you can interact with this!". and it also adds more personality to the game in general

so, how do you guys feel about it?

Spoiler

and if you are one of the people that know, and/or use/have used my mod before, thank you very much. i appreciate every comment, suggestion and bug reports people have made over time :]

and also a big, huge, GINORMOUS thanks to Clifford W. for letting me use a bit of code to make my mod, the mod wouldn't exist without it

Oh, its his? I was about to comment that there was one cursor mod!

yep, it's me, the sewers. in the flesh and bone :]

(to clarify, i made the "interactable cursor" mod and the ds cursor for windows. "fabin's curly cursor", while drawn by me, is completely programmed by Clifford W.)

I would like custom cursor without input delay for practical reasons: on white/light background it's sometimes hard to find default white one, and since I need to see cursor to move with mouse, I become disoriented in those scenarios more often than I would like to admit. It usually happens during snowfall, in full enlightement on light turfs and things like snowstorms (mod weather). Black cursor is such a QoL (and art is nice as well). White outline makes it practical in dark areas as well.

Regarding mod - while it's great, I think I can notice small delay, which somewhat limits practicality of it for me as I need black cursor the most in boss fights. So I strongly support lag-free way for modders to make custom cursors.

I'm not quite sure what the third poll is talking about, any explain?

it's just asking if you don't agree with the stuff i'm asking, would you be okay instead with an official API to facilitate modders adding one (a cursor that changes dynamically when hovering over things. i guess terraria's one is a good example?) into the game that's better integrated

there's been a mod already that implements that idea, but it has a big drawback of having some input delay due to it being rendered in the game itself, which can be a big turn-off for some people that'd like to use it. so having a way to bypass the input delay with some help from the devs would be neat

regardless of what they do, i would love it if they implemented an API for such a thing. custom cursors are so fun to me and it really gets me in the zone when im playing a game, and they often have a bunch of cute little details in them that make them really fun to use

(also, i've been using your WX-78 cursor for a few months now, im still absolutely in love with it. thank you for letting me use it, its so well made :joyous:)

I found some cool mod that gives cool cursors but there was unbearably high input lag so I turned that crap off instantly. Would be awesome if there was no input lag so I could turn it back on, or even better if Klei made their own cursor set in such a way that it's easy for mods to replace it. I feel like games not replacing your cursor is rather retro at this point, it's very 2000s.
