Radiation, new environmental danger?

Recommended Posts

Radiation could be a new, insidious, unseen environmental hazard in the near future. The radiation would act as a static form of environmental poison, produced by some emitters apparently identical to other natural forms, such as turf, rocks or cracks in the ground.

A character without adequate equipment would be completely blind to both the presence of radiation and its harmful effect on the character's body before the onset of symptoms. The symptoms would be various, including:

- immunosuppression: the character suffers maximum health loss and takes increased damage from stale or spoiled food,

- muscle weakness: the character gains a negative damage modifier,

- nausea and sensory alteration: screen vision becomes distorted, similar to what happens with low sanity,

- body alopecia: prevents Wilson and Webber from having beards, reduces the cold tolerance threshold of all the other characters,

- widespread muscle pain: as long as it is contaminated by radiation, the character's sanity continues to constantly decrease as if it were always twilight/night,

- loss of body fluids: the character has a penalty to maximum hunger and/or suffers a faster loss of hunger.

Excessive doses of radiation would lead to the character's death; however this is not immediate and is always preceded by many days of symptoms, so it is very unlikely that a character will die of radiation without realizing it.

To notice the radiation doses suffered in real time, a character must build a dosimeter and equip it in the hand slot.

The recipe for craft a dosimeter would be as follows:

To notice the presence of environmental radiation and an emission source, the character should equip himself with a Geiger counter. Here is the manufacturing recipe:

To protect himself from the radiation that infests an area, the character should make an anti-radiation suit, as indicated in the following recipe:

In highly radioactive areas, the character could find new and precious materials, uranium and plutonium, with fantastic scientific applications!

Come on, let's bring the Constant into the atomic age!

i love the idea of cc and fw to be bosses to start a pseudo hardmode similar to terraria making surviving way way harder but also getting superior gear with the rifts

Also the idea of willow wearing a gasmask and radiation suit is very gender

Wouldn’t this technically just be playing the game on 24/7 summer or winter???

the only way it becomes “unique” is with resources, mobs, new hazards, and ultimately… hazards that aren’t “Solved” by an easy to get item like the Thermal Stone.

I think you don't understand

I feel like real nuclear power to exploit are the Alter shards as well as the endless abundance of nightmare fuel.

If we get any sort of automated buildings or structures to power up our bases with some steampunk or wagpunk doohickies it would make sense to have nightmares and moon energies exploited for it. So far we have very little of those types of things.

New radiation-related enemies

Radioactive dogs could spawn in the world after day 200.
Radioactive dogs are apparently identical to normal dogs and have the same behavior. To identify a radioactive dog you need to be equipped with a Geiger counter that shows it as a radioactive emitter or a dosimeter that shows the radioactive effects of its presence.
The radioactive dog emits radiation in a small area from its position, increasing the character's accumulated radiation if not equipped with adequate protection.
When a radioactive dog bites and injures the character, the character instantly accumulates as much radiation based on the damage suffered; Radiation armor halves the radiation suffered in this way, making it essential for limiting acute radiation poisoning.
A radioactive dog, when killed, has a certain probability of releasing radioactive waste.

Radioactive lobsters sometimes spawn underground. Radioactive lobsters are covered in a thin green layer, which allows them to be identified as radioactive even without a Geiger counter.
Radioactive lobsters can be dangerous allies, capable of poisoning affected enemies with acute radiation poisoning. However, to befriend radioactive lobsters you need to feed them radioactive materials, such as radioactive waste, uranium or plutonium.

Keep it in the underground caves.

Have zones filled with radiation and mysterious eggs and quadruped lizard-like monsters that can go invisible.

You can attempt to steal one of the eggs and hatch a powerful mount that can glide over the void. But stealing one of the eggs causes every single one of those monsters to aggro onto you.

I’m assuming it’s going to be identical to the hamlet dlcs poisonous gas biomes? except… in that DLC the biomes had more then just a health DoT ticking away unless you wore protective gas mask, it also has contaminated trees, contaminated enemy mobs, etc..

But without new mobs, or new things happening to the world around you: it’s just playing with the server set to 24/7 Winter. You take constant damage without clothing/items to deal with it.

Cave Rifts have Acid Rain that damages your health without acid protective gear, but unlike the hamlet dlc….

the effect by itself is pretty boring, what Klei NEEDS to do is come up with creative new concepts on how this “Weather” effects the games mobs and its resources.

For example trees can be come infected with deadly poisoned fungi, and you’ll need to “cure” the tree before you can harvest resources from it.
