Happy 10th birthday DST!

I remember that.

I remember clamoring for a key, and when I finally got one, the game didn't have MacOS support yet so I had to just settle for watching my friends play. And even then, all I got was listening along to their shenanigans in skype calls while getting the periodic screenshot!

I remember how janky and unbalanced things felt in the early days. It was honestly a blast. I remember being so hopeful to see where everything was going.

Whenever I finally was able to play, first server I went in was instantly burnt down by a pre-nerf Willow. So was the second. And third. There was no smoldering, so whole swaths of land would just go up in seconds. I think the fourth server there was someone going around with an army of like 50 ghosts (back when you could have ghost followers) just instakilling everyone they came across.

I remember how much fun I had with people. How this game enabled me to live whole lives out with those that I met.

And then it was released on April 21st, my birthday, no less!

...Has it really been ten years? Like, actually?

Have I truly been here for... hell, I have.

Well now I don't feel nostalgic, I just feel old. Thanks a lot, pal.

that sounds interesting, could you provide more details?

It wasn’t, really. When you were a ghost, every time you haunted a grave there was a chance that a ghost with a Wigfrid helmet (or at least the unicorn) on the top of their head would pop out. They would then follow you around while you were a ghost and their AoE would turn on whenever anything got within the radius. Do this for long enough and every dead player became a meat grinder, including (especially) to other players.

I have no idea who thought it was a good idea and I’m pretty sure 99% of discussion was “please remove this oh my god.” so it didn’t stick around very long. Ghosts could also start wildfires so in general whenever someone died the rest of the forest would go with them, too.

So the 10 year anniversary of DST is that THIS upcoming Roadmap or 2026?

Probs 2026..considering that that’s 10 years when the game fully released. Don’t starve solo was in beta in 2012, but they celebrated the anniversary of the game 10 years after its full release (2013).
