i hope dst next year focuses on improving and updating the older biomed

Recommended Posts

considering how old the game is, a lot of the biomes from the start of the game are really really outdated now, especially compared to the new biomes weve gotten like all of the lunar biomes and islands

namely, i feel the forests, swamp, mosaic, rocky, and savannah biomes should be reworked

this is especially the case with the savannah, its by far the weakest for me both visually and gameplay wise,

The savannah is in my opinion kinda really ugly and theres nothing in there except grass beefalo rabbits and occasionally spiders, savannahs in real life are very diverse places with all sorts of wildlife, i feel pulling from them to make it feel more alive would be nice, things like snakes that spawn from grass or rabbit mounds or leopards, kinda like an alternative to hounds that spawn here, also the turf could be updated as well, at the very least i think letting twiggy trees grass geckos and nitre boulders spawn more often in them would be a massive improvement

im not expecting all of the biomes to be updated all at once since thatd be a ridiculously high amount of work for the devs, but they could update them like how minecraft does with one of two biomes being focused on per update, thatd let the devs focus on things other than just the characters and would honestly bring back a lot of older players

a small wishlist for things i would love for updates to all of the biomes would be just

- new ambient mobs - think of rabbits or catcoons that just roam around and interact with eachother, maybe steal food and stuff off the ground etc.

- an enemy or 2 - especially ones like frogs that do annoying things that can serve to be new challenges, maybe have ones that do damage over time, ones that do ranged damage etc

- new tree types for each biome - it so weird seeing pine trees or birchnuts spawning inside savannahs and swamps they just dont match, and it would just be nice to have more variants, treeguard variants would be cool but arent really necessary

- new setpieces - i do feel like there should be more of these in general but like, maybe one per biome that is interesting or can serve as a tutorial for some confusing aspects of dst for new players, things like unfinished farms, burnt down bases with the materials for lightning rods etc

- new turfs - this one i just want the most, besides the forests i think the tufs badly need an update to be more in line with the newer visuals, maybe they could move the old turfs to be craftable, also the mosaic should get a turf im surprised it still looks like that considering how important it is

From 2022 until now, I have seen countless requests from players to improve their biomes. Almost every two to three weeks, posts appear with excellent suggestions about biomes, and every time people are asked what they want to update their opinion polls, the world or biomes always rank high. I think anyone can see how eager players are for world updates. In fact, the biome also urgently needs to be updated:
Many of the biomes on the surface have not changed compared to the version ten years ago, except for some landmarks (oases, rock nests, stages, etc.) whose designs have long been outdated. For example, the initial biomes always had mosaics, which existed in early DS for the convenience of players obtaining gold (the probability of obtaining gold by digging boulders was very low in the previous version). However, with some content changes in the version, the biomes have not kept up. This problem has been particularly noticed in SW and HAM, and you may not easily obtain gold in the first few days of the game. Additionally, you may have noticed that the spider rocky often connects to the oasis desert, as the document stipulates that the "lock" of the oasis desert requires a biome carrying a dangerous "key" to open, and the spider rocky a precisely meets the requirements. But in fact, you can directly pass through there, it doesn't have a blocking effect. There are many other similar issues as well.
The problem with caves and oceans is even greater, as most of their biomes are almost just passing stations for you to search for important locations (ruins, archives, Moon Island, water trees), empty and useless. And there are some places where you can clearly feel perfunctory, just combining a few ordinary elements into other biomes, but they still don't have their own thing.
Sadly, even though so many players are expressing their demands, Klei has never had any reaction to it, and I really find it hard to have any expectations anymore.

I feel like a lot of people really overrate how hard it is to get gold in the DLCs. SW/HAM still have noticeable patterns to their biomes, and that includes the ones gold are in. It really doesn’t take long to pick out the patterns and get gold without too much struggle, especially since most of the recipes you need for early progression through most of the biomes needs a science machine, which takes a single piece of gold and you always get it back when hammering it.

Locks and Keys

Gonna link this bug report since you are correct that a lot of biomes are linked weirdly due to tiny oversights, ones which don’t take that long to fix.

I think my biggest issue is when a biome is both unreliable to build in ot actively discourages it. Take the grotto, for instance. It’s a very pretty biome, but once you activate the archives it turns into one of the most annoying biomes to work with in the whole game. It’s unfortunate since it’s very unique, but sadly just is way too bothering to be practical for a base spot, which is unfortunate since the area around it is fairly ideal for it.

Klei has made their choice to spend many years on character changes, and we're never getting all that time back.

They also seem very allergic to working on actual worldgen matters, and to have them rework an old thing like gardening and crab king is nothing short of a miracle.

Can you even imagine a new season like SW or aporkalypse? We can't, because they never dared to touch the basics or core of a DST world.

RoT and Grotto were cool, but apparently we're never getting something like that again.

For all the hate Uncompromising gets, they have done exactly all those things that keep veterans on their toes such as random night events, heatwaves and giant spring tornadoes. Hell klei often takes many ideas from UM indirectly. I guess they must be doing something right.

I would recommend to start becoming at peace with the current state of the worldgen, because devs don't do updates forever. It's going to end sooner than we think.

can you not be so negative

We need to encourage the devs. But ultimately we are talking about klei. Who's motto is to do what they want. And honestly unless something is really wrong. I think we should try to encourage them to hard foucs on biomes and updates to existing things like the ocean and caves that have been neglected

Yeah there's something special about exploring the world and how it interact with the player, i wish they end the skilltrees and stop the bossfights to focus a bit more in the world but only time will tell what happens

Facing facts is harsh isn't it?

No. You don't understand klei as a dev team and designer. Will do what they want, when they want, and in whatever manner they feel will be substantially polished . They work on klei time
