I believe they technically can't, but if something on edge of the screen starts smoldering while you are moving the other way, than it is easy to miss. I stopped making lureplant farms near my base because they kept smoldering without me noticing.

Don't lureplants get priority for smoldering?

their range is up to 6.5 tiles away from the player, they can happen out of view from certain angles like under the player but they don't happen "a screen away"

they will happen on the edge of your screen while you're busying yourself in another direction so that's essentially out of your screen, not to mention when the direction is right below your own camera pitch. But yes I could have worded it better

The summer sound filter also camouflages the smolder noise almost perfectly, I can see why everyone thinks its unfair.

it's honestly more like a harder version of winter

Yes, basically:

Hypothermia --> hyperthermia

Blue hounds --> red hounds

Deerclops --> antlion sinkholes

??? --> wildfires

Autumn just has bearger and whichever hounds (2nd year).

I've put in a lot of time in servers on default settings. Mostly other people's and Klei Officials, though also there was one during the beta when I was figuring out how to run a dedicated server and didn't know how to change the settings yet. I had to deal with wildfires if I wanted to stick around at all. I can handle them without getting too frustrated, although I wish the range around you where they could start was a bit narrower so the smoldering wouldn't start on the exact opposite side of the screen from where I'm walking.

Really, the one thing I would want is a universal character item that can call/halt rain, as Wicker/Max are the only ones that can do that and J feel it’s very unfortunate a potential solution for widescale bases is locked behind playing those characters in summer. I can’t say I would want much else, though.

Yeah, bring back the dripple pipes from Shipwrecked!

I always play with wildfires because it is a fundamental part of the game.
And also, it is very fun in my opinion. If you forgot to put a flingomatic, or put it in poorly, then you will be punished for your mistakes.
DS is a game that does not forgive such mistakes, and that is its charm.

To be honest, I do not want to turn off fires because I do not want to make an already easy game easier.
I mean "easy" only because I learned to cope with all the "threats". But the more of them there are, the harder it is to keep everything in mind.

It is difficult to even imagine how much I have burned during the entire time I played DST...))

The thing is that they dont bring any challenge... having a watering can or refuelling a iceflingomatic to protect 10 structures is one of the less difficult things in the game. The ammount of chore and activity and building limitations it brings doesnt pay off the ""challenge""

Stuff like plants getting dry is more interesting (and could be more if wasnt because apparently throwing ice doesnt kill them...)
