Have critters been forgotten?

Recommended Posts

Hi

As you probably know in Don't Starve Together is Pet mechanic. You can adopt pet by craft them near Rock Den, but do you think it's a little forgotten?

Last new pet was added in november 2021 in crossover with Terraria - it was almost 3 YEARS AGO, after that we get skins for pets... And I feel like Klei could add more pets in some QoL update, you probably want ask - why? It's a very simple - just for fun, and new pets could have a little perk when they're full like Mothling is shining when it's full.

There's a lot pets that could be add to game, some examples:

  • Shader - Mini version of Fused Shadeling, crafting from 1x Pure Horror 1x Fist Full of Jam (it should imitate Dread Mite I guess xD) - this mob can absorbe miasma, also it reduces range from shadow aligned mobs will start attack you. Custom animations could be so scary and maybe Shader could hide for a while in other objects almost like mimic? (it's shadow aligned mob)
  • Friendly Gestalt Pet - Mini version of Gestalt, crafting from 1x Pure Brilliance 1x Wet Goop (I had no idea which crock pot dish should be here), it's similar to friendly gestalt from Celestial Champion's Crown - this pet could be usefull cause player with this pet needs to be hit by gestalt three times to fall asleep, also it reduces range from lunar aligned mobs will start attack you. Custom animations should be a dance with owner, and when Friendly Gestalt is hungry it could scarry as and try to attack us (but it's only bait, it will always miss it, also it's lunar aligned mob too)
  • Crustacean - It's a mix of mini crab and crustashine, crafting from 1x Broken Shell 1x Barnacle Pita, little crab, and I think this is controversial, but I think if we go close Pearl (Crabby Hermit) with this pet and let them play together for a while, Crabby Hermit will get another friendship point, also custom animation like dig into ground to hide to play with owner :D
  • Moonkey - Mini version of Powder Monkey, crafting from 1x Accursed Trinket 1x Banana Shake - it haven't any perks, but Moonkey has a custom animations with boad stuff like Moonkey could dance in mast or looking around, looking inside Tin Fishin' Bin, help us with roll up Anchor Kit etc. I think it could be so SO cute stuff for salty dogs <3

That's my ideas, if you have others ideas - drop it, or give opinion what do you think about my ideas, what you would to change etc., have a nice day and see you! :D

PS: Sorry everyone for my english, I know it's so bad heh, also sorry if I start this topic in bad section, but I thought it's the best place to start it :D

Though I limit myself to only adopting sheepingtons, I love the critter system (although they currently don't do much) and thought it would be cute if more of them existed.

Random side idea: I wish that sometimes "wild" critters would spawn but that they can't be tamed or owned. I mean just in the sense of small chance of a wild critter appearing near to a character, if they own a critter. So the critters would do the pet-plays-with-pet animation for a while and follow some hours, and after e.g. 3 in game hours the "wild" critter would despawn again. It would just be a cute non-game-impacting way to make the world look more alive.

(Alternative: Wild non-adoptable/tameable baby creatures randomly spawning in general near their adult counterparts to make the world look more alive. [or like a breading season like for the beefalos and their baby beefalos])

one thing i want to say, yes there should be new critters, BUT NOT EVERY SINGLE FEATURE IN THE GAME HAS TO BE USEFUL (no, i won't believe anyone saying that the moon moth is the meta because it gives you light)

Critters are meant to be decorative and cute, that's it. It's good to have something cosmetic in the game which isn't too easy to obtain.

But yea. they have been forgotten #justiceforcritters

Genuinely i couldn't care about critters until they do smth about the eating mechanic which has absolutely no value other than draining my irl sanity.
They either need to starve a lot slower or it just needs to be gone, cause it adds nothing.

i would like more pet stuff but right now the noises they make are super distressing and sometimes startling. it makes them unusuable for me

Maybe one could make their noises less distressing? (I think I have read this several times already so Klei should really be doing something against the constant noise.)

Sheepingtons and the others could STILL make cute sounds, but maybe less frequently?

frequency is irrelevant to the problem.

You know, that's an interesting idea, them appearing in the world but not being possible to tame. It gave me an idea for a variation on it, though: instead of just despawning, they could lead you to the rock den. It'd be like Ticcoon or those gingerbread pigmen from Winter's Feast, where you follow them to get to a location. Not only would it liven up the world a bit like your idea suggested, it'd also make players more aware/reminded of the existence of the rock den and that critters are a thing they can adopt.
