Why can't we use salt to make Jerky more fresh?

Recommended Posts

I'm surprised there's been this many replies without anyone giving the answer: The salt box is a storage container specifically for raw meat and veggie items that can be cooked on a fire. I believe salt shares the same mechanics, only being usable on raw meat/veggies that have a cooked counterpart. Thus the answer is that, since there's no "Cooked Jerky" item, jerky does not fit the category of items that can be salted or put in the salt box.

Of course, Klei could make an exception here, but the reason that we can't do this currently is mechanically consistent, and this would be the first exception of its kind to my knowledge.

My suggestion would be to add a "salting" mechanic to Jerky racks. Hang a meat or kelp to dry + Add 1 salt. Salt reduces dry time by 30 seconds, 15 for Kelp and also negates dry times when wet. (To incentivize still using racks during spring or rain? but I guess that is kind of a draw back to rain and spring idk)?

Jerky - 10HP (5 for Maxwell) (Down from 20) / 25 Hunger / 15 Sanity / 20 -> 30 Day spoil time

Small Jerky - 4HP (2 for Maxwell) (Down from 8) / 12.5 Hunger / 10 Sanity / 20 -> 25 Day spoil time.

Kelp - 0HP (Down from 1(lol) / 10 Hunger (rounded up from the weird 9.375 value) / 10 Sanity / 20 -> 25 Day spoil time.

The idea is to increase spoilage time while keeping Warly relevant with his seasoning salt and the queens bundling wrap but to also have some drawbacks for the extra spoilage timer (Maxwell is a maybe because his Dr said he shouldn't have too much salt). Making it more of an early game option and to add a bit more use for salt outside of salt licks and the 1 or 2 salt boxes and non-Warley players. The idea for small jerky and kelp only increasing by 25% is because smaller food items would spoil faster (because there is less of it) and to promote using larger meat while still providing use for small meat as well.

I feel like Jerky's only purpose to extend the shelf life of meat, but even that "niche" isn't 100% competitive with bundles. Jerky can't be used in polar beager bins or salt boxes either, which are some of the more competitive and later game options. The stats are decent but not the best compared to crockpot recipes, which can be mass produced in the later game; 20 health and 15 sanity for a slower eating animation is acceptable but inferior to many other options. These stats don't kill jerky's viability but it's another limitation of the meat.

Jerky could use some love, maybe allowing it to be put into more storage containers or just having a longer shelf life. It could spice up the meta a bit.

Jerky is in that weird spot where pre bin it’s a very handy option and becomes very moot the moment you get your hands on the bin. I myself used to use jerky/dried kelp a lot for ruins clearing because of its 20 day spoilage time. In a world where most sanity dishes spoiled quickly and you really can’t afford to have your sanity dishes going stale, jerky was a cheap and highly effective alternative to keep your sanity up for ~10 day or less trips.

Nowdays, it just doesn’t really fare well when even 3 day dishes will last 3 times as long as jerky does in the bin. I personally wouldn’t mind seeing it get a buff in some capacity.

Warly cant eat it so I don't make it :/ Why would he salt something he cannot eat anyway?

Although I do consider making it on non Warly runs. While there's simply so much alternatives than before that I use more than jerky in terms of both general stat restoration and longevity (bundling wrap), when I do have it it's very convenient to have. given it restores all the stats at once.

Apart from being able to salt Jerky I also propose having its stack size increase to 40 given it's dehydrated and should take up less than or close to half the space of meat, if sensemaking is valid for this sort of balancing.

I want a jerky overhaul. Putting jerky in the salt box should be possible. Drying racks should be able to make fish jerky as well (it exists!), which'd let us preserve fish for longer.

yeah
