Wormwood needs more varation in his quotes.

So this has always been a slight pet peeve of mine, although I haven't really addressed it before, since I didn't see it as that much of an issue, but I guess I might as well bring it up it now since the new beta is coming along.

[I'm aware that's technically not an issue fully fit for the update discussion itself, but it strongly correlates with it, so oh well.]

First of all, I've played the beta, and it's coming along great! Most of the problems or bugs I might've had have already been brought up by someone else, so there's no point in that now. But I've also wanted to say, that I've read through some of the character quotes for the new mechanics (Because I'm that kind of person, yes) and I've noticed that Wormwood's quotes are rather dull and repetitive compared to most other characters.

Now don't get me wrong, I know he's supposed to be that character who barely knows any English, but I do believe he could have some more creative dialogue or have a more emotional reaction from time to time.

Here's where my issue stands: for example, for each of the rabbits and some of their items, he refers to them by 'Squee Hopper' + another word/s. And I do think he should sometimes use different words/names, or refer to the creature itself less.

While unrelated to the Beta, he also oftentimes describes something, rather than having a genuine reaction to it, which makes sense for a character like Wicker or even Maxwell since they're the know-it-all characters, but Wormwood seems like someone more expressive and emotionally guided.

It's just that, while Wurt's quotes (someone who initially also didn't know any English) are developed and full of personality, his in comparison seem quite frankly...boring, and haven't changed much since his introduction. I'm somewhat bothered by this since he's one of my favorite characters and I would love for him to have more expressive quotes or occasionally use fuller sentences. (As I've seen him do)

(Or who knows...make him attend Mrs. Wickerbottom's English lessons.)

Not saying that Klei should straight up change all his quotes, but maybe...give him some more flavor for this beta branch, if that would be possible..?

I was a wicker player mainly until wormwood came to dst and one of the most grating things about the switch were indeed his very lackluster quotes. Ive since just made peace with it since thats the vision they have for ww as a character. 
 

quotes for some of the newer content across the board seem of a different quality than old content. Take for example quotes for the berrybushes. Every stage of it has unique quotes: barren, empty/picked, ripe. And the inventory item has a quote too. 

the banana bush on the other hand literally only has 1 quote. Inventory item, barren, empty, ripe all share the same quote. 

there are other examples like this if im not mistaken but i try to gloss over it when ive noticed it in the past so i cant immediately recall them cuz in the grand scheme of things, if corners need to be cut then quotes r an ok sacrifice to make i think. Cant be easy writing interesting quotes for every character for every item etc… unfortunately 

Wormwood is such an interesting character as he comes from the moon. Having quotes that imply that he knows stuff is great because it shows that he knows a lot more then what people expect from him. However the amount of repeating words and lines that sound either exactly the same as other quotes or that are pretty much identical makes it feel like Klei is pushing that too much.

 

I don't see why Wickerbottom wouldn't help wormwood with English either since he is a very useful survivor who works with the food. Being able to communicate easier with him would help the other survivors greatly. I also really don't like how apparently Wormwood makes so many jokes on poop, that even Wortox is tired of them but there isn't a single quote with poop jokes anywhere. It feels like Klei is being lazy with him because its building something with Wormwood that isn't there in his quotes but in other survivor's?

 

Wormwood knows more then he lets on but lacks the English to properly convey what he means. I'm not asking for him to be a English major I'm just asking to not undermine the intelligence that he has just because he doesn't know English very well. He can still convey thoughts and feelings and it should show more in his quotes. Please and thank you.

I'm not even a wormwood player but i LOVE looking at character quotes and honestly his are always the one i kinda skip quickly because they're so repetitive! You are so right in this post I really hope his quotes get modified like idk have him call the bunnies "hop-hop" or something so that you can still understand what he's talking about without all his quotes being one word difference! Or maybe have him have a quote saying something that has happened before like "squee hopper used to munch on me" ( or for the new bunny hat have him say that it's currently trying to munch on his flowers)  or something because it all looks the same! Please klei change his quotes, if not older ones at least these ones pleaaase :'(

Couldn't agree more. When you remove his speech quirk, way too many of his quotes boil down to essentially "Hound." "Bird." "Rabbit." "This is food." Why do his quotes not reflect the whimsy and zest for life we see from him in the animated shorts?

Ever since Wormwood was added to Hamlet's early access, I've been pretty attached to Wormwood. After a few years of not playing either Don't Starve or DST during college, then getting back into it, I ended up looking through Wormwood's speech script, for each game. I'd missed him, and wanted to get an idea of his personality again. 'Cause just going by quotes I saw when I first started replaying, well... he's endearing, but... yeah...

After going through the speech scripts, I, too, have noticed that while he has a handful of quotes that show emotion and opinion, a lot of his quotes make him seem dead inside. Especially since his default face ingame isn't smiling. Despite his childish word choices, his quotes often sound blank. Which really is odd in contrast to how joyful he tends to be depicted in official art and animations, outside the gameplay. If he really is meant to be secretly depressed, I'm not against that, but I wish there was clearer indication of what to believe about him. One can easily learn a lot about the other characters by going through their quotes, but with Wormwood, I end up trying to read between the lines a lot of the time.

Anyway, yeah, I'd also love if he could show opinions and emotions more often in future quotes. And showing more of a sense of humor, as has also been mentioned! I think he could do so, even with limited vocabulary. The pigs, wildbores, bunnymen, merms and mants all show a lot of emotion and opinions with similarly limited vocabulary, after all. And Wormood himself sometimes does.

But yeah, basically – Wormwood, please, just be yourself, don't be afraid to tell us what you actually think... come on, don't be shy, pspspsps-

I don't think I have ever agreed with something more wholeheartedly. Wormwood is honestly such a unique and interesting character within the lore of the world yet a lot of the content actually involving his background and who/what he is is so very lackluster in the games, and his quotes are a prime example of this. A lot of his quote really are incredibly bland and repetitive with him having very little unique or emotion in what he says and of course his very limited simplistic way of describing things (you'd think after living with the survivors for so long Wicker would maybe try to teach him a thing or two).

And the thing that really gets me that despite how blank and lackluster he appears in the games it's greatly contrasted in how he is in a lot of art and animations outside of game that shows his more joyful and whimsy side that truly showcase his actual character much better, but even that doesn't really tell you much about the actual interesting lore behind him or even reveals that much about his personality, feels more like making up for the lack of one in game.

It's a huge shame cause Wormwood is one of the most fascinating characters in the game yet there's really not that much to go off of in terms of available content. There's a lot of hints to something much bigger and more interesting yet it feels like we're often just left with crumbs while Klei just leaves him to the wayside while just focusing on other stuff. It really forces those who love the character to really dig in and read between the lines just to find anything while it makes those who aren't as interested to disregard him entirely. This is something I deeply wish Klei would change one day cause this character deserves way more.

Alright, what direction would you people want a more eloquent Wormwood to take with his dialogue? I don't know much about coding, but dialogue mods are one of the few things I can do/have done, so I might give it a try if I feel like it and if there's demand for it. 

So I know this is pretty dumb, but I've actually tried rewriting some of Wormwood's most recent quotes to better match his character (basing them off his pre-existing canon quotes for DS, DST, as well as other DLCs, which I've admittedly read through, if you've ever seen my other posts on this account you'd know what I'm talking about.)

I like Wormwood's quotes. As you've said, he talks like someone who's unfamiliar with the English language.

 I don't think we should feed the stigma that someone's fluency in English is a measure of their intelligence.

I never said he should speak fluently or ever hinted that his ability to speak English is a measure of his intelligence. I simply think many of his quotes are too repetitive, some downright copy and pasted, and often feel cold or emotionless(ie. describing things without a genuine reaction to them), as opposed to what his character is meant to be. It just kinda feels lazy on Klei's part, when other characters have so many various quotes that don't repeat themselves and show their genuine opinion on the matter.

Your version feels so much more suitable to the intent of what Wormwood is than what we have in-game. Do you have any intention to finish out the whole list and make it into a mod? 

I think a friend of mine described it best, and someone who is a Wormwood main, but a lot of Wormwoods new quotes are becoming too 'caveman-esque'.

I kind of can't blame klei for the deterioration of character quotes, there's is a lot to write every update so it becomes an after thought for them I assume, and isn't as important as actually finishing everything important. Wilson has suffered a similar fate, Which is unfortunate because quotes are so fun and unique to Don't starve as a whole, I haven't seen another game do this to the same extent DS has.

A couple of friends and I are trying to rewrite some of his quotes, so yes, possibly!

Yeah...Wilson has been getting the short end of the stick too at times. I understand that Klei might not have the time to make every quote sound good, funny, or creative, but I wish they could give the community a chance to write some ourselves or hand them suggestions. (As long as they stay true to the intended character ofc)

Whenever I mod stuff in and enter the stage of typing out examination quotes, I always find Walter, Warly & Wormwood to be the most difficult to make unique just for how bland their personalities feel to me, so I wouldn't really mind if Klei really went ahead and "revamped" Wormwood's quotes :biggrin-new:

Yeah, as much as I love playing Warly, he is a bit one-note (almost every quote is food-related).
