What if Walter was DLC?

Recommended Posts

I think the only thing that would change is they'd be less afraid of pumping up his slingshot's stats.

iirc the only "busted" DLC survivor on release was Wanda. Wortox, Wurt & Wormwood were all pretty balanced at launch.

At best Walter *Might* have gotten a mini rework like Wortox did with Wickerbottom, but that's about it.

I'd probably use the spools anyway because a gameplay mechanic is infinitely more valuable than any cosmetic, even if I still wouldn't use him much.

well, in four years whenever the topic of dlc characters have come up most people i have talked to have told me they have between 1 and 0 dlc characters so it would probably tank what little traction he has. he is definitely one of those characters that doesn't have a lot of gamer™ cred and if there are a bunch of people who don't get wurt(one of the strongest characters all-round) just because she is dlc then i imagine walter wouldn't fare well

Walter isn’t terrible and having a permanent chester that can never be killed that also can be fed 3 monster meat to turn into a rideable mount should be enough to justify his spot as a DLC character.

But characters like Maxwell and his Shadoe storage or Winona and her new skill tree stuff might have him beat.

I wish the Walter skill tree will focus on new abilities for both Small Woby & Big Woby, and Walters not so great slingshots..

Ah people always mention this but Maxwell's top hat storage isnt as useful as woby's in practice. You can't craft stuff using resources directly from his hat. The hat has two different inventorys per shard which is bad in my book.

Even with the 3 extra slots, that doesnt make up for the hats extra clunkyness.

So storage wise, Walter is superior to Maxwell.

Walter is a DLC character, when he got released they just gave him for free.

Like how Wagstaff is a base DS(or was it RoG?) character instead of a Hamlet one.

the devs just wanted them to be accessible to everyone.

I wanted to say this about Walter,

but now I am super confused, because I first noticed Wagstaff when I bought Hamlet only. (Also so far I have only played Wagstaff in Hamlet world because I honestly thought he was a Hamlet exclusive character and now i am super confused on how I got this idea xD Damn this gives me so much more uses for Wagstaff [he's one of the few characters I occasionally play despite not being my main simply because I love his voice and character design and quotes so much] )

I don't think anything would change. He'd still have the exact same kit, everyone would still act like no one likes him, and there would still be a couple people who pretend to like Walter but constantly spam about how he's the worst character ever with no redeeming attributes and needs to be changed entirely.

(Sorry for quoting this again but....)

I just looked Wagstaff up in the Wiki and he is INDEED a base game character!!! I fear this means next time I play in usual DS/ROG(Maxwell's world) I will do the endless nightmarethrone cycle with Wagstaff and Maxwell for once xD

This makes me wonder, since I never tried before. Is it possible to play a world with Wagstaff, have him replace Maxwell and then play a world with Wilson and have Wilson free WAGSTAFF on the nightmare throne instead???? (rip so far I only went back and forth with Maxwell and Wilson and therefore don't know if any character put on the nightmare throne will universally replace Maxwell until being switched, so if anyone knows please tell me because I know I will definitely fail at my first attempts of playing Adventure mode with Wagstaff to find out if this works. I just want to know if it is worth it.)

Poor Walter. I personally like him, although I don't play him, but I don't get why people dislike him so much. (I like his set of perks, though I don't play him because if I did I would like more disadvantages)

A bit off topic, but Wagstaff cannot be held on the nightmare throne.

I do wonder if Walter was released as a DLC character if the perception about him would be different. I consider Walter to be about on par with Wortox, but I see a lot more discussion about Walter than Wortox. I wonder if this is because everyone got to try Walter out and might have given him less of a chance because they didn't invest any money/spools into him.

I could also see it being possible that not much would have changed. Walter has some of the worst "lose more" mechanics of the whole cast and is a very easy character to death spiral with if you play him like you would other characters. His utility makes up for his downsides to create a balanced character in my opinion, but it is very easy to form a negative first impression with Walter.

Oh no xD Suppose "grainy transmissions" are out of reach for shadow powers then. But then that's a hillarious nod to him not being there physically, thanks for letting me know so I wouldn't be surprised of him being gone all of suddenly. I'm happy now :) Sorry for shortly derailing this thread.

I think that he went the entire Hamlet beta as a HAM character, but on the Hamlet oficial release, they made him DS as a "thank you" kind of thing. If you happen to find the forum post from the HAM release, it is better explained there!

You also need to remember in context: When Walter was released he was a decent character:

  • Back then, ranged combat was really late game and only limited to a lot of grinding with Wickerbottom. The slingshot was never great, but much better to the alternative.
  • The best explorer of the time was Woodie, and despite not being able to walk across water like him, Woby was a safer option, specially for caves exploration.
  • YOTB didn't happen yet, so riding was only limited to the surface for everyone except for Walter

As the game improved, YOTB happened and the characters got their reworks+skill trees, Walter's skills became more and more redundant over time.
Currently, you can probably do whatever you would imagine you could do with a rider/ranged/nomad character much better with any other character.

He's long overdue for a strong rework and skill tree.

Honestly another thing that contributed to hate on him was that specific youtubers started some strange narrative about how his perks didn't make sense without elaborating on how his didn't but everyone elses somehow did no matter how out of left field they were compared to his (like willow's monster teddy bear for example)

Interestingly enough Walter did get a mini rework like Wortox, Wormwood, and Wurt did(I mean pre skill trees)

They increased his slingshot's range slightly, made it so his poop pellets don't draw aggro from other targets outside of the one he hits, and made it so Woby needs to take at least 8 hp of damage before she'll buck Walter which is effected by armor.

Really all klei would likely need to fix most people's opinions on Walter would be to do some number tweaks on his kit mostly his slingshot as it's too weak both damage wise for his damage rounds and effect wise for his special rounds while also being too costly to use. As for Woby they'd probably just need to make using her safer and remove her speed decay otherwise he's more or less completely fine.

ik about that, but that was pretty small compared to what Wortox got.

Wortox got the ability to teleport across the entire map, double the effectiveness of souls for teleporting in succession and sanity for releasing souls iirc. Walter's changes aren't that significant in comparison.

I mean sure but his was really kind of needed more since before his he was really lackluster.

Really I am very tired of hearing/seeing anyone comments Walter’s perks make no sense and all over the place, because this came from a few YouTubers and everyone just copy from them.

I’m not arguing Walter’s kit is good, but his theme is always about one thing: the unique management of Sanity. He is afraid of getting hit so he has a range option (but you are not forced to use it). He is not affected by negative sanity aura, so he is not allowed to enjoy sanity aura from clothings either. His little scout hat helps to negate his negative perk, so he is more encouraged to wear armors instead of helmets, and thus Woby is there to offset the loss of a backpack. Even his allergies to bees - honey is crucial to create most of the dishes that restores a large amount of sanity.

So no, Walter’s kit makes total sense. It was very obvious to me that Klei made him to encourage players to try something different from the meta playstyle. Yes he might be in the weak side now because his stats are a bit low but this is just a number problem. It can be fixed like how Woodie’s Weremoose went from not being to able to fight bosses to killing them with ease, sometimes even face-tanking them.

this is just a little aside but in pubs and on twitch i see more walter players than wortox ones. other than the poop pellets i havent even heard anyone talking about either of their qols before coming back to this forum

Tbf most people don't know their qol update changes heck most people didn't even notice all the changes Wurt got beyond being able to recruit multiple merms at once like how even merms who aren't followers will defend her if they see her getting hurt. It's more of a playstyle thing most people aren't bringing Woby into combat so they probably didn't notice she wasn't immediately bucking Walter and in Wortox's case most people probably just don't realize he can double soul hop or that his souls got stat changes beyond the large soul hop. I do agree though that for as much as people like to call him bad Walter tends to be played more than some of the stronger characters despite even some of the people who play him still memeing about him being terrible mechanically despite really only having a stat issue. A lot of it is just a case of influencers being influential.
