Tips on killing Dragonfly?

Recommended Posts

I have played quite a bit of DST by this point (nowhere near some of the hours I've seen, but well into the triple digits) and have yet to successfully kill Dragonfly. Granted, I haven't really been focusing on bosses as much, but I still feel like I should have killed her by now.

Last time I attempted it as Wurt (not one of my mains, I should add) with 4 merm guards and 1 regular merm, and another player as Wolfgang. We both had hambats, about 2 1/2 log suits, and 7 cooked potato to use as healing (probably not enough, in hindsight). We didn't use the stone wall method - something we really should have done. I did bring the pan flute, but it kept putting my own minions to sleep along with our foe.

Given all of that information, my question is this: what are the best methods for killing Dragonfly, and what could I have added to my previous attempt? We managed to get to the second Lavae-spawning phase, but that was it.

Thanks!

Walling up the larvae is tedious but effective. You could alternatively use ice staffs or Wolfgang's mighty strength to quickly kill the larvaes instead. They target the nearest person when spawned so you could run to Dragonfly when she spawns them to pull aggro, and then to your friend so he can kill the larvae for you.

Another method is building a ton of Merm/Bunnymen houses nearby to farm them and the Dragonfly. If a boss is too strong for your followers, just add more followers...

Try to learn the timing on dodging the swipe when Dragonfly is standing still. It'll help you save on healing and armor.

Here are tips:

  1. Larvae will target the closest player to them when they spawn, and they will never attack anyone else untill death. You can stay close to dragonfly while she spawns them, and then run around while your friend deals with DF one on one.
  2. Dragonfly will spawn 5 larvae in the first summoning session. After that she will spawn 1 more with each time.
  3. You don't need to kill larvae, they will chase you for a bit and die on their own. But if the last larvae dies from old age, dragonfly might restart the summing session which is not something you want.
  4. Ice staffs are good at killing larvae, but they won't work next to fire from dead larvae.
  5. Putting dragonfly to sleep during summoning phase will deagro her, and give you window between killing her minions. It is recommended to put her to sleep before the last minion, for reasons above.
  6. Enraged dragonfly will calm down on her own eventually if you value flute uses more than your time. If she is deagroed you can just chill in her arena as long as you aren't getting too close to her.
  7. Dragonfly attacks can be dodged. It's a practice thing, but you'll never pull it off unless you'll try it every fight. Not all the attacks however.

Primarily WX-78, sometimes Wormwood. I also have played as Webber quite a bit.

I can only speak for Wormwood, since i play him the most. Walling larvae is the best option for him since fire damage is actually BRUTAL even from a single source. Also watch out for her enraged phase, more so than other characters. For healing option if you're rushing him before winter poultices are the easiest (but a bit time consuming) option and you can use Glommer goop for blooming, which makes dodging easier.

During normal phase, land 6 hits and run. The Dragonfly in this phase is essentially a glorified Beefalo.

During Larvae Phase, 3 Ice Staff hits should freeze any larvae, and the larvaes die automatically after a while frozen, which should guarantee Enraged Phase.

Enraged Phase can be Panfluted to calm the Dragonfly down IIRC. Or you can throw Water Balloons at it. Or Ice Staff can also work (though I think the freezing threshold increases with each freeze). Once Dragonfly is calmed down, you're back to normal phase.

If you wanna fight Enraged Dragonfly without skipping Enraged Phase, then you're gonna need to google videos of people doing it. The kiting timing for it is seriously tight.

Heres how i beat her:

Built walls around the lava pools

Gathered 30 merms

Watched the consequences of my actions

There's something so perfect about taking the merms into combat, knowing that they will destroy the boss's existence through the force of hate.

And do feel like in 300.

If you can play with as little as one other player than dragonfly has a rather silly built in mechanic where if enough damage is done to her, she will drop scales off her body and “Faint” not only are the scales useful for crafting things, but also a fainted dragonfly = free hits.

When playing Solo I opt to just bring enough gunpowder into the fight so the first time she enrages (and I Panflute to get rid of rage mode) I can just plant the kaboom at her sleeping head & before waking up again dealing ALOT of damage to knock that 27,500hp down to more reasonable numbers.

I don’t feel like using gunpowder (found in the weapons tab intended to be used as a weapon) is cheating..

And besides- Bring enough players and she’ll constantly faint out for free hits anyway.

I prefer a large stonewall box , say 16×16 maybe a tad larger if rocks are abundant, right on the edge of his spawning area pools. Big enough for a campfire on one corner and a endothermic fire pit in the other. That way you can fight in it for any season.

Leave one segment of the box broken so you can run back into it after triggering the Dfly to chase you. Now you can either tank him inside the box or do the 6 hit and kite strategy , your call depending on health and armor.

When she first goes to spawn larvae use that time to repair the one section you used to get back in the box (keep an extra wall piece in your inventory before the fight) and heal yourself. After she comes back for more just keep an on how many larvae are left and be ready to use the Pan flute when she gets enraged or ideally right before .  Just heal up each time she goes to spawn and rinse and repeat.

This method is not very efficient in terms of rocks compared to others , just simply how I prefer. Once setup it only cost 1 rock each fight to get in and out. Good luck , bring plenty of health and armor until you get the hang. Hambat or better for weapon.

A friend and I did something similar. Going hoping for the better, no walls, no pan flute. Just a couple of hambats and marble armors.  with I as Wurt with 4 merm guards and him with Wickerbottom. We got through but almost got to a point of having to flee as all of the armors broke and had to craft helmets in the middle.

Anyway, Dragonfly is not the issue, she's fairly easy to deal with; it is the lavaes that create chaos. You have some ways to deal with them. You can freeze them with ice staves, you can surround the ponds with walls, you can surround yourself with walls, you can sleep Dragonfly and run away until they die by themselves... or since your friend is Wolfgang you can give him a fresh hambat and tell him to hold the all mighty F against them.

(Or just get more merms)
