Dyornos
Hi all! I just upgraded my pc, but for some reason I get weird stutters every 5 sec where the game momentarily freezes for ~0.2 sec and then continues on. My fps is great, its above 100, but the stutters make it unplayable. It doesn't seem to happen when just starting a new colony, but it does in my midgame colony. (This is without Spaced Out DLC) I have a 7800x3d, RX7800xt and 64GB of DDR5 Ram @6000mhz. Does anyone know if these stutters are caused by some setting in the bios or something? I already tried turning off ResizeBar but that didn't help. The memory profile was first set to auto but changing that to EXPO I didn't help either. If anyone has any tips that be great, I really want to play but the stutters make it impossible. Thanks in advance Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/155605-stutter-every-5-sec-with-highend-build/ Share on other sites
Charletrom
I once had issues with the “outdoor renovations” achievement that manifested in a similar way. Disabling achievements fixed it. SharraShimada
Without knowing, what you´ve done with your savegame, there are so many possibilities... First you have to understand, there is absolutely no real benefit from many cores when it comes to this game. Yes is know, windows tells you otherwise, but windows is lying all the time, so ignore it. ONI depends mainly on single core performance. That said, it all comes down to do´s and dont´s in gameplay. DO clean your base, but dont build multiple paths. Messy pathfinding and cluttering the area are 2 very easy mistakes. Vast open areas with Jepacks are also known to drop performance to near zero. Huge amounts of critters will also result in bad performance. You may want to take a look at this mod: Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/155605-stutter-every-5-sec-with-highend-build/#findComment-1710283 Share on other sites
Dyornos
Thanks all so far for your replies. Reason I'm posting this is because my old pc ran the colony fine, all be it on way lower fps. It was a i7-6700k. It's weird that now, on a newer pc with way better specs, it has this hickup. Even if it's single core performance it should still run better than my old pc. If anyone knows of any AMD related settings in the bios or in adrenaline (or overlays) that can cause these issues I'd love to hear about it. Dyornos
FOUND THE CULPRIT. If a dev could way in on this that would be great, but for some reason the windows 11 Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling causes these issues. I still have slight stutters but that is expected midgame. But the big ones are gone. Is there a known issue with this? Gurgel
No idea, but I am and will be on Win10 until end of support. Win11 is too experimental for my taste. I have no stutters at all and a relatively large colony (Spaced-out, classic start, 12 dupes). GPU I use is a Radeon RX6600 and I am gaming in FullHD only with no special GPU settings. I just install the driver and let it run. If you want to know any other things to compare, just let me know. I go light on the dupes, typically I have only 12-16 right until the end and place at max a single dupe per asteroid except the starting one. For that, no performance problems observed so far. No idea how a colony with tons of dupes would do. This isn't the only instance of ONI not properly claiming the hardware it needs and the scheduler depriving it. And yes, this specific issue is known: You should add a comment to this issue in the hopes of improving visibility. No idea how a colony with tons of dupes would do. I generally have around the same number of dupes (16ish) with a larger starting plantoid. The end game is when I explored all the other planetoids (usually after 1000 turns). I have AMD 5950x and get around 25-35 fps in 3x (60 fps in 1x speed) with the Fast Track mod, but the game has a bit of stuttering and is not as smooth as the beginning. If I am going to make a guess based on the online benchmarks, I think that with 7800, I should get 30% more FPS, which is not enough to justify the upgrade. If you are willing to test, I could share one of my save files. Dyornos
I just reinstalled windows to windows 10, and it has the exact same issue. It seems to be something with either the AMD CPU (7800x3d) or gpu (rx7800xt), altough I think the GPU is very unlikely as I had this gpu in my old build with an Intel processor. blakemw
Another setting which has definitely helped some people is setting CPU affinity to encourage the process to run on a single core (look it up for your OS), though for me it only helped on lower power levels (if the laptop was set to max performance it made no difference, but made a huge difference on balanced or power saving). Here's a comment with some other tips about forcing max performance to the ONI process: There's also another issue I remember about some other GPU setting which can be changed which helps, problem is I can't find that anymore, I do remember it mostly wasn't in English (I think Chinese) which doesn't help with searchability. I did a similar testing some time ago and the 3D part of AMD can give you 50% or more performance improvement due to ONI liking the cache. Does not surprise me. Since I moved ONI to a 7800X3D almost all performance problems simply vanished. The ones that remain are occasional things, not regular ones. Plain AMD drivers, no extra software or settings. sheaker
Are You sure it is GPU related? Shutter every 5 sec could be also spyware or update check. Opening resource monitor could help You exclude other applications interfering with ONI. If it is GPU related... Is Your power setting (in control panel) set to high performance instead of balanced? Gurgel
Hehehe, looks veeerry different from my set-up Ok, here is what I see (Steam FPS counter): 1x: 60 FPS (at limit) normal max zoom, centered on printing pod 24 FPS max zoom (whole starting asteroid in view) 3x: 45 FPS normal max zoom, centered on printing pod 18 FPS max zoom (whole starting asteroid in view) In 3x I saw 2 micro-stutters (1/2 sec) in one cycle, about 1/2 cycle from each other. I saw none in the next cycle. This is without your add-ons, just plain base ONI. Feel free to share a screenshot of your base : ), and thank you for running the test. With no add-ons, I'm getting around 45 fps at 1x and 25 fps at 3x. I think I'll wait a bit longer for the next generation. The 7800 is incredibly powerful, but it has been over a year now.
