ADM Posted March 15, 2024 Share Posted March 15, 2024 A few days ago I had an unfortunate event happen to me while doing a duo Celestial Champion speedrun. I'm cutting the chase but we were well on our way to defeat Crab King but our boat was about to crack. Fear not, I said, as I had more Boat Kits at the ready to place. I then attempted to place a new boat and mind you I was already prepared to avoid the usual blockage of the claws, the meat they loot, or debris of prior boats. I usually like to bring a Lazy Forager to CK fights for this reason. But then, back to back, as I hover the free spot I spy, a Puffin lands and claim it... well, we were running out of time so I quickly drift to another point, and it is confirmed ! My character goes over to finally deploy it. However : "I can't do that", as during the time I place it another Puffin that had yet to even descent to my screen spawned there. The end. The birds decided our fate that day. Sure, this is a very specific occurrence, and maybe a skill-issue, but this is an introduction to remind ourselves of these many inconvenient moments you likely had in numbers about building in Don't Starve, in all shapes and forms : How many times you had to chase these pesky birds off the area you had selected so finely for the very cage to enslave them, as they fly off and leave seeds behind that force you to quit your placing in order to pick 'em ? How far this item must be moved so that I can place this chest that has no collision with it whatsoever ? How hard can it be for beginners to understand the Ice Box is placed last, are they stupid ? Placing issues extend well over structures: Planting flowers, bushes, tilling the soil as well... or placing walls, it's not often we must finish a house by the walls but here we are. But enough of the post-irony. I'm seriously hoping that after all the consequential quality of life features that this game has received, which come in hundreds and I can only be grateful for, I will see something done about how blockers behave next because this is where it's lacking. Few things could be done for starter to avoid the examples from above and more. Most items don't need to block placing. Things that have collisions should push items outward, as for things that don't collide... well... there's really nothing to do. This should also apply to small mobs, there is no serious reason for a bee, butterfly etc to prevent players from building or tilling. I'm also looking at both Chester and the Friendly Fruit Fly. Also, "placing order" has to go. Yes it's not really intentional but everyone is made aware of it and it yet it remains, it is just tiresome and I'm convinced it can be addressed by stretching only a bit on the placing system already in place. All of these things, would do for a colossal favor for every players that builds a ton or ever so slightly. Puffins have zero reason to exist. They don't drop anything unique, they give seeds which is like... who asked for seeds at sea??? And they block boats constantly with their body and with seeds they leave behind. I think klei should remove them almost entirely and only make them spawn when you drop seeds yourself in water. No way they got those from water, so did they just carry them? Why and How? I swear, they're doing this just to mess with us.
