So... Next update's going to have something to do with the shadow watchers right?

Recommended Posts

Yeah, the trailer was odd. But what's interesting is this trailer potentially contains clues for the upcoming year of content.

In my opinion, one thing in particular sticks about this trailer.

As far as I'm aware, this is the first time they've been animated in a trailer, and...

They appear friendly?

So lets go over what we know:

  • They are a type of benign shadow creature that appears while sanity is low
  • They appear around campfires and have minimal interaction with the player
  • They aid the ancient fuelweaver in battle

As they were aligned with the fuelweaver, they likely also opposed the shadow alignment. As such, with the ancient fuelweaver defeated, the shadow weavers likely remain the only ancient entity that can provide insight into the rifts.

Presumably, this trailer was needed to properly introduce the concept that the shadow watchers were both benign, and able to interact with the real world. Otherwise, it probably would have been a bit of whiplash if a shadow creature suddenly started aiding the survivors.

That raises the question - what exactly are the shadow watchers. Why did they not become aggressive and lose their humanoid shape, like the rest of the shadow creatures?

Either way, I think its likely that the next update will start introducing how the survivors will start preparing to face the full power of the rifts, with the aid of the shadow watchers.

They were in Encore a couple times, they were even the ones to grab Maxwell, assisting Charlie

Huh. I stand corrected.

It still strikes me as odd though how they're depicted in this trailer, as the Watcher is completely benign, even friendly.

it might mean something, but it could also just be because they're the perfect shadow creature if you want something that'll stand around being ominous but not actually do anything. Mr Skitts runs off when you get close and the Crawling Horror and Terrorbeak are associated with when you go insane and have to fight them. The Shadow Watcher just watches, and not knowing why they're watching is their charm

In a vacuum I'd agree with you, but the devs explicitly mentioned the trailer was made for something to do with next years content. It just would seem weird if that amounted to "ominous generic shadow creature"

they could hate maxwell because he brought shadows in the normal world and kept bringing people into the world inhabited by shadows, although tbh i doubt that devs differentiate between the shadow types much and just used the one that seemed friendly, the shadows most likely don't have intentions and that was put in the trailer for no reason, just like how the trailer was made for no reason and with no connection to anything or new info

Maybe. Possibly.

Honestly, I was sorta expecting an update to followers. Pigmen, specifically, since they were shown off being far more lively.
Especially with how much people have been talking about wanting Klei to go back to older content? I could see followers being given a spotlight. Reminds me of this blurb from their COTL crossover interview.

Devs have explicitly stated its relevant to future content

Could be. But the lore maniac in me would prefer it to get some answers for what's going on.

That and I don't think it's particularly necessary to tease persay. Like.. Wigfrid and Willow missed out on there short to tease a follower rework?

Aside from that, the frostjaw follower dialogue does give some evidence to the theory.

I just want an Ancient character who's entire ability set is based on how high or low their sanity is (plus cool visuals when insane)

Yeah!!!! That could have heavy story implications unlike our always vague clock making dlc character. Imagine thulecite specific ancient crafts for both shadow and lunar items depending on your alignement or maybe not specific to your alignement cause ancients dabbled in both lunar and shadow magic. The biggest thing is that the character would be able to fully translate archives and ruins scripts holy moly that would be amazing.

I have some good quote ideas already!!!

When attacked by a gestalt:

"I've worshipped you!!!"

When attacked by shadow creatures:

"Stabbed by my own kind!!!"

When examining fuel:

"Brings nothing but misery"

When examining thulecite:

"Holds great value in my culture"

When examining charlie:

"So, you're the new puppet..."

When examining maxwell:

"Has a familiar demeanor... i don't like it"

When examining Wormwood:

"But why would they send you?"

When examining fuelweaver

"Your tyranny caused all this!"

"Give up, your majesty!"

I don't either, but I also don't think they should've not gotten an entire trailer for a lore tease either. It feels wrong both ways to me...

Will we FINALLY be able to take their homes for ourselves after we kill them?

We can make Pigmen Houses

We know that Pigmen Houses are big enough to fit us

What's stopping us from taking that house?

I think it's probably a hint for next shadow side From Beyond update.

Back in the ANR, we knew that shadow creatures are not completely mindless and violent beasts, but some kind of beings with civilization and society. They had cities, leaders, and even internal struggles between leaders.

This idea is being explored more deeply in FB - shadow creatures could have their own hobbies, memories and perceptions (Reaper), their own name (Ink Blight). And make some of alliances with survivors.

If shadow affinity allows us to communicate with reaper, maybe watcher are the same

A more speculative theory? I think Watcher was some sort of royal agent, working only for AFW (King) and Metheus (Queen).

I think they did before, but now they just seem like a hive mind with the only purpose of serving them.

y'know what, fair enough. This whole situation is weird.

Ancients never had a humanoid shape to begin with. Look at the metheus puzzles. And watchers aren't the only human shaped shadows, wavy jones is also human shaped. Probably manifested from charlies influence.

perhaps another 2 character (or 3) skill tree update. with Walter and Wurt, (+Wendy). Walter gets a pigman follower skill tree, and Wurt gets merm's buffed. (+Wendy-Abagail skill tree)

Although it's a great idea, I doubt that it's a Skiltree announcement. 100% of the focus was on Walter. The other survivors are just kinda....there
