Jakepeng99 Posted September 13, 2023 Share Posted September 13, 2023 People complain about the ocean alot and this will be another one to add to the sea and i am okish with the ocean, though this i never see mentioned and it does matter quite alot. There is no reason to have a boat- world generation discourages it alot. Investing into sails and sometimes other expensive items is made obselete. Now, lets say you were basing in the red spot, the pig king, and you wanted to get to the lunar and your boat docked with sails was next to it. You could either go on the yellow route, forced to go around the outside of the ocean being slowed down by sea stacks, it would take quite a bit of time. However, if you were instead to take the green route and walk (often faster, or much faster than a boat), you would reduce the distance by cutting all the corners. After you get to the edge of the water, you can make a quick boat with an that you may reuse to get to and back from the lunar quickly. This logic applies to everything of importance in the ocean, from the waterlogged, to pearl and more. You are also cutting the risk of losing your boat with all of the resources attached to it. By going the extra mile by adding expensive sails, you now lack the ability to fight malbatross confidently on that boat you made or risk your sails being destroyed, where as having none this would be no issue and save alof of time, stress and resources. Wavy jones may also open a sail and ruin your day. Sails also have an inconsistent turning radius and control compared to an oar, costing 1 driftwood log or from the bill of malbatross. Heck, even monkey pirates will destroy sails and other structures on your boat by hand sometimes even if this rarely will happen. The main issue is the risk comes with not much reward. It is really fun to deck out and personalise a boat, this aspect is well designed, but it would be better if there was less things in the game to discourage it and more things to make it better. There should be more benifits to actively traversing the ocean. Solution? There is not an easy solution to the whole problem that doesn't involve adding more additions to the regular oceans to award travelling, but in terms of sails (Including the Malbatross one), reducing the price of them would be a big step forward since they are really overpriced. The malbatross sail price is ok though there is a chance you don't get enough feathers to make one which is annoying, so three canvases would be nice.. Maybe being able to reinforce sails to grant resistance to being destroyed, and granting a small turning radius boost. In your specific screenshot it would even seem to be the fastest way to the island. I have no goal to save time in order to get to the moon island faster. I don't want to lose the spirit of exploration in this game. (Maybe you also play with mods?) When I'm going to sail, I have several primary goals: - find a bottle with a message (in order to find the location of the Hermit) - swim to the island of the Hermit (preferably on the way to find other important locations to understand what will be close to my base and what will be far away) - buy a drawing for a winch from a Hermit - Sail to the sunken forest and load up to three nuts (seeds of a large tree) onto the boat - return to the base by the way I haven't sailed yet to explore more territory (if necessary) in 90% of cases, for one such swim across the ocean, I find all biomes, at least in the amount of one piece. And I don't see the point in avoiding sailing to save time. FOR NOW, I'd do what I suggested on the beta part of the forums TL:DR The ocean part of my suggestion was that every single bottle found on the ocean should yield a treasure chest. Would be productive to spend time at sea if that were the norm. People would have to put boats or docks between the land which makes going through it with a boat end up still not working. Literally just park a boat in a spot that won't block traffic so you can move between land masses easily, it'd add a day to day reason to have better oars outside of just sailing, or make wormholes more useful because rn they are so random they can be completely useless on some worlds and extremely life improving on others. Being this reluctant to change is what I see being the biggest issue going forward to DST, it can't stick to new survival stuff because people loooove boss rushes (just play Isaac) (boulders aren't a survival mechanic to be clear) and it can't do anything new that changes the core gameplay at all unless it's related to characters because I guess klei ran out of ideas or they are just way too scared to actually do something to spice up the game other than slapping more perks and skill trees onto 10 year old characters. And no, adding more and more lategame content isn't spicing up the game, even if you can toggle it so it's available at all times without doing the 2 final boss questlines. It's simply adding more content onto a game that has a ton of outdated mechanics, systems, and even philosophies IMO.
