What if each character gains insight on their on way?

This might turn out to be what others fear: quest system

But at least it's better than doing nothing

If so I think it can be set in multiple ways (like Hermit quests): every 100 trees cut, reaching Moon Island, defeating deerclop, etc., but these goals are hidden (progress is not displayed anywhere), vague hints at best "Complete some feat to get it" so that players who don't know about it feel less pushed by the goal. Of course, some seasoned players who already know everything will deliberately chase the target and complain, but that's their business.

Until you inevitably look up the wiki. A new player isn’t restarting a world over and over again to gain more knowledge. They die once or twice drop the game or look up guides and the wiki and continue playing
