Frosty_Mentos
I dunno if I could call that "moon" as Alter themselves but just a part of it. Like the "moon" acting like a sort of a plug to prevent the greater beast of the cosmos and beyond from ever interacting with the Constant. Only that it becoming a peeping hole for the godlike entity that has only a fraction of it's power by glaring at the ants below, flaking stones and it's detritus from that hole. Then after event is done it closes it's eye with a second eyelid till another Wagstaff experiment comes along to annoy it for it's power. It's kinda interesting to imagine the "moon" acting as a sort of a proxy for the god being above, while nobody of the few below know what it fully looks like. The Moon itself is referenced to by Alter from both Klei devs and in-game code references, specifically noting that the art and animations of the Moon opening and looking around the world are checking if 'Alter is awake'. General imagery, and especially the part where you restore the connections seem to imply that Alter is just the moon in of itself! With the outside being its 'shell'. Think of say, a turtle of sorts. Plus Maxwell has always put quotes around "moon", implying it isn't a moon at all. If Alter was just hiding inside the moon I don't think he'd be so suspicious of it and refusing to properly call it the moon.
