Is there a "best" beefalo temperament and saddle combination?

What is annoying about the ornery in my case, I find, is really the stick consumption moreso than the constant feeding to mount. I should really have a better setup at my day count. So I guess the next task will be that. Should make the beefalo lifestyle 30% more pleasant.

There are "cheap" alternatives to Twigs for obedience:

  • Foliage from Forest Stalker
  • Light Bulbs from caves
  • Kelp
  • Bananas
  • Blue Caps from Mushroom Planters
  • Garlic or Onion from farms
  • Ratatouille from Stone Fruit (you can sneak in 2 Honey and it stays fresh longer)
  • Brush (going to have extra tusks anyway)

Keep in mind that keeping the Beefalo full reduces obedience decay so you can combine them with something filling like Steamed Twigs if you plan to constantly mount/dismount for a while. In most cases there will be things by the areas you visit that can be picked up for obedience so taking the time to make a reserve of feed is not entirely necessary.

Since the shield of terror was introduced, the usefulness of beefalo as an infinite use weapon/armour has somewhat been replaced. The biggest benefit of a beefalo has always been the speed boost tho.

For most of the harder or more complicated boss fights like ancient fuelweaver, celestial champion, crab king, bee queen, using an ornery beefalo for combat is a really bad idea or just straight up not usable.

Other bosses like shadow chesspieces, twins of terror, klaus, any seasonal boss are easy peasy on foot so using an ornery beefalo is pretty unnecessary.

If you dont play wendy/wes, rider is by far the best for most characters including walter (rider is a nice late game luxury replacement for woby but you definitely shouldnt prioitize taming a beefalo as walter.) Pudgy is the best for wortox (if you intend to have a souls only diet) or wickerbottom.

Wickerbottom/Maxwell with bone helm and beefalo still seems useful though. Infinite magic and no bone helm durability loss due to accidental hits.

Yeah a rider beefalo or pudgy beefalo (kinda) can still do ok damage with a war saddle if you want to farm nightmare creatures while riding them. No need for ornery.

Maxwell can literally just chill on top of a beefalo and let his duelists wreck everything if you have a bone helm, armour and thurible.

Default beef with war saddle 25% bonus speed, 50 damage.
Ornery beef with glossamer saddle 55% bonus speed, 50 damage.

The 30% bonus speed matter (as beef dont benefit from any other sources of speed boost), and war saddle is trash tier, it even slower than basic saddle 40% bonus speed, stop thinking default beef + war saddle is just as good as ornery beef with glossamer. It is faster for me to farm 68 butterflies than hunting for 2 ewecus.

The shield of terror, while great, is limited to 51 damage for most characters and makes kiting with a cane really awkward. You want the speed from the cane, but by swapping, you lose the protection, and if the shield is your main source of armour, you're left vulnerable. It's durability is also very low, and while the ability to repair it helps make up for this, it's still really easy to break it if you're careless.

Where this weapon shines is in killing smaller enemies by reaching the 50 damage threshold that allows for 2-3 shotting mobs like spiders, hounds, and bees, and it's especially good at this because most of these smaller enemies tend to drop food. For raid bosses (or really any boss), there are higher damage alternatives that are just better, since more damage dealt means a quicker kill, which means less resources spent fighting the boss. It's here where ornery beefalo start to outshine the shield, as the armour and weapon cost of any given boss drops to 1 grass/twig, and the healing cost is easily remedied by farming potatoes and toma roots. The only real downside to fighting on a beefalo rather than on foot is finding times to heal your beefalo, as that usually requires a use of a panflute, and if the enemy is immune to it then there is the risk of having to abandon the fight.

That's what I like about this game though, there is no correct solution to anything, and there's numerous options to accomplish any given goal.

Ramp up hunt suprises to tons, get war saddle, use it on untamed beefalo whenever i fight and switch to normal for exploring, clear ruins and kill AG with beef and turn it into ornery. Craft construction amulet, if your speedy, you can have 34 butterflies ready and make the glossomer saddle as soon as you get back from ruins(the days get shorter when you get closer to winter so you should probably have them ready before going to the ruins since you dont want to farm in the later days of automn) . Then i switch between glossomer and war saddle as i please(if you didn't know, you can click on the beefalo with a saddle and switch it without any cost.yeah idk why the saddle horn exists when you can do that but oh well.)any ways thats how i midmaxed my early game with beefalos.

Yeah, until/if we get a weapon equivalent of the high-durability of the dreadstone armor set, there isn’t really a refuelable weapon in the game which is good for fighting raid bosses unless you bring multiple shields to the fight and drop them as they wear low (and refuel them after the fight).
