So when are the remaining characters gonna get saved from Vanilla purgatory

Walani is the ultimate ocean convenience character, focusing around the single perk of her surfboard that ends up constantly useful both through the early game and late game. Early on you'll use it just as a better raft, however once you've figured out the usual paths you take around your world you'll end up getting huge speed boosts and constantly topped off sanity from riding waves. She'd need some sort of rework, however I'd argue it wouldn't have to be a massive one. With some extra limitations to the surfboard to stop it from being directly a SW boat mechanically, she'd be a character both useful in the early game for exploring the ocean, and useful late-game for the constant return trips that some players do (for barnacles, the moon quay portal, lunar island crafting, etc)

Role is filled by Woodie and the grass raft. She really offers nothing as a character due to the ocean now already being very accessible.

Wilba is nothing like Woodie mechanically. Surface level they're both werewolf-type creatures. But in actual gameplay? Entirely different. Wilba's curse is genuinely hard to control to the point that activating it on purpose can still be dangerous if you're not prepared, and her transformation has no distinction between a work mode, fight mode, and exploration mode, it simply has them all stuck on the whole time, at the cost of CRAZY hunger drain and likely going insane from all the raw meat you'll be eating just to keep it up for the potentially INFINITE time the curse can last, depending on how much monster meat you've eaten. This contrasts with Woodie's forms that all appeal to different categories of play, are carefully activated at the right time and shut off when that activity's done, and can be noped out of at any moment by just running away and standing still. Totally different niche!

But this basically means she's just a mix of Woodie's wereforms but with a tweaked transformation method.

Woodlegs's ocean perks would translate well enough into starting with some boat supplies. The sea legs isn't Woodlegs's main focus though, it's just the thing he spawns in with, the actual star of the show is the lucky hats. Woodlegs is a character who, the longer you exist in a world, constantly racks up loot from treasures, at the cost of sanity being way harder to manage. This works perfectly fine in RoG and Hamlet, it would work fine here!

Honestly I feel like he could translate alright but what he does could just become items instead.

Wheeler already works amazingly well in all 3 worlds in DS, so of course she'd fit well in DST. I think the idea that Wortox's soul hop or Wanda's backstep watch are anything like the dodge is a silly one that comes from a huge simplification of all 3 of those character's mechanics. Wheeler's dodge is an always-available, no resource cost burst of speed that can be used both to get around the world faster and to quickly dodge attacks in a fight. It's so easy to use and becomes such an automatic response that you'll be dodging constantly without even really thinking about it. Wortox's soul hop on the other hand I genuinely don't think anyone uses for dodging attacks (it's just too precise and resource intensive for too little gain), while Wanda's backstep watch is ONLY for combat and is super clunky to use for anything except like, idk, bishops I guess? Her navigadget and pew-matic are also really good just in general btw.

While not really the complete same Wortox, Wanda, and Walter seem to clearly be her spiritual successors so there's not really a need to bring her as well.

I don't dislike the characters but my question is what do the remaining characters really offer? Kiel could give them a new identity via new perks but the rest don't really fit in with their current abilities.

Okay short simple question: If every other character was reworked/refreshed & had new gameplay added to them, what makes you think they would just “port” the remaining DLC characters exactly as they are?

It's not that I think they wouldn't but my issue is they fall into one of 2 catageories either their mechanics don't work in the dst landscape and need a overhaul or their abilities overlap with existing characters perks and in either scenario I feel like the question comes up why not just make a new character with more unique theming instead?

You're doing the thing I said.

And your doing that thing where people just claim they're right without backing it up and making the assumption that the only reason the person doesn't agree is because they somehow can't comprehend their deep understanding.

I kinda hope we continue getting new characters. 1 a year would be ideal, especially since we dont have to dedicate so much time to character refreshes.

Having new characters is good for the game it keeps players coming back.

As for bringing back older characters, Im not sure. As long as they can keep making interesting characters (more Wanda less Walter) then im good. Though i do like Wilba, Walani, and Woodlegs character design wise so i'd be down to see them interpreted in DST if they were able to.

I would like Woodlegs simply because he's one of my favorite Don't Starve characters, I don't really care how strong he is gameplay-wise and I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way about all the other missing characters too.

However, I feel like now that the reworks are all out of the way (which was quite repetitive to be honest), we could use some general content updates.
