Gi-Go
I just stumbled upon an interesting skeleton boon. It had crockpot, cook book and a few dish recipes. I thought to myself: "how lovely, klei are introducing cooking to new players". And then I read their recipe for dragonfruit pie: 2 dragonfruits, 1 pepper, 1 potato. Seriously guys? If you gonna impliment features aimed at beginners, meaby you shouldn't troll them with false ingredient requirement?

Honestly I have my grievances with the way the recipe pages work and think they could be improved, but a recipe like that is not specifically picked to mislead newcomers. It's just because the game will pick from almost ANY ingredient that is valid for a recipe that recipe cards like these happen. That being said I do hope the recipe cards get a small look over because I personally feel they make cooking come off as way more rigid than it is in practice. This is a a feature working as intended to let player to know that they shouldn't trust everything in the game, especially themself.

They put so much work into cook book menu, they simplified its crafting recipe multiple times, they added examples of recipes scaterred all over the game, and to top it off they even made a boon. And after all that hard work to replace a simple wiki visit - they still refuse to actually give information to players.

This is a valid recipe. Yes it is not the most efficient, but its not like they're telling people to put 2 monster meats with 2 large meats for a meaty stew... They aren't lying, they're just picking one of many MANY truths of varying quality (probably programmatically.) I don't believe the intention is to teach players what they should do, or what is meta - but only to encourage them to try something. It is not necessary they tell the player the absolute minimalist meta method of producing anything.

Why are recipes completely random? Why does cook book only show what I already made and how I already made it? What is the player supposed to learn from this? That [crockpot dish] can be made with [ingredients]? I'm not saying it should offer people to make pies out of sticks, but how about actually teaching them recipes? Like "dragonfruit, fruits or vegetables". Or for trail mix something like "nuts and berries" for Warly damage thing "voltgoat horn and honey". For pierogies "meat, egg and vegetable". Telling basic premise instead of giving 1 example and refusing to elaborate.

That [crockpot dish] can be made with [ingredients]? From what I can see they did give new players a general outline on what ingredients they need for a certain dish. However the recipe given is not the cheapest and so probably later on a new player will start to think "Hey this dish is expensive, its good but expensive. What if I try and tweak it a little and see if I can get a cheaper version of it." and after experimenting for a while they might have found the cheapest possible recipe for a certain dish. Although this is just what I think are the recipes cards purpose. It could just be Klei going "haha misinformation funni." and it does fall flat if the player just gives up trying to experiment or thinks that the recipe on the recipe card is the only recipe for this dish. HowlVoid
There are certainly many ways these cards could be improved. They should honestly just bite the bullet and make the cards present the minimum necessary values of a particular type of ingredient. 0.5 meat, 1meat, 2.5 meat, etc. It would serve the purpose of actually encouraging experimentation instead of being taken at face value. Before a new player will even think that ingredients can be substituted, they'd have to find one or more copies of the same card. I honestly don't thinks it's all that immersion breaking, we measure food with number values all the time. Perhaps .5 of something could also be described with an icon of some sort. When examined they give 4 ingredients to make a crockpot dish. Although most of the time the recipe given is usually more expensive than it has to be. Qairon
There's probably a player out there right now that thinks meaty stew can only be made with two koalefant trunks, a red meat and a berry because of those things. (Yes that's a real card I've seen.)
