Can you do the stage play solo?

I can't complete act 2 with the doll and blacksmith because I can only wear one or the other. 

If I wear the doll nothing happens and if I wear the blacksmith there is a soliloquy and then Briar hounds appear and the play doesn't progress.

You can use mannequins instead

I have mannequins on the four little p platforms next to the stage, do I need to place them on the actual stage itself?

The chairs are simply decor.
You can place the mannequins on the stage itself and dress those to continue preforming.
