doubledgedboard
Is there any way to get an older version of the game? I played hundreds of hours of the game, it was basically my favorite game for an entire summer... but it was prior to the "germs" update which completely ruined the game for me -- it stopped being about the hardcore survival loop and how to cleverly build different gas management systems, and turned into basically a micromanagement simulator. I really long to go back to and play that version of the game again that I enjoyed so much. The configuration options today (like making germs effectively useless) just isn't the same, the game has evolved so much since then I don't have fun when I play it. Back in the day I would just reinstall from CD and then only patch up to X version, but that's gone with Steam these days. Any suggestions? There were like 20 large updates since then. It`s like playing the game without 70% of the content. I don`t know if anyone has that old of a version saved somewhere. Personally i never felt like germs required micromanagement. Just a simple setup is usually enought to forget they exist. especially after all the changes that were made to the system. But yeah the game evolved. A lot of stuff was added. It`s a pity you don`t enjoy it anymore. SharraShimada
I dont think KLEI will get you access to a that old version anymore, even if they had it in the archives. And so i guess there is no legal way to obtain an very old version. I would think KLEI would not object, if you bought the game already and then obtain an ancient version through more shady channels, but that comes with certain risks and i would not recommend it. doubledgedboard
Yeah that's what I figured. It's pretty disappointing. I work in software development and while automating releases is great for some games, in other ways it's pretty frustrating because prior to steam and forced updates, players often got to pick and choose the version of the game they liked. I massively prefer the much more simplistic game that existed back then. It wasn't riddled with upgrades. The survival loop was fun. Every time I've tried to dip my toes in since, I quickly get bored because not only is the game extremely easy now, but there's upgrades that solve pretty much any problem you can think of. Feels like Klei didn't know how to stop themselves and just kept adding, and adding, and adding. Oh well! 400 hours is more than I get out of most games Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/144186-old-versions-of-the-game/#findComment-1605911 Share on other sites

cpy
Yeah I'm not sure if this still works but you can give it a try. I mean method may work but if klei deleted old version from steam it may no longer work. Since I exposed how to download old steam depots. Jorge Junior
I have it in my archive and I guess if you don't update it will just work by changing the files. but which version are you looking for? ISAWHIM
For the record, currently, germs are effectively "useless". Dupes get sick for a day or two from slime and get tired. Food poisoning is equally as useless as it is just a statistic to toilet use increasing. I just plow right through the biomes, without even a single atmo-suit, using all my dupes. (Once I have 16 dupes.) I offer the following considerations if you want to make them TOTALLY useless... 1: Don't grow mushrooms, at all. (The only thing that uses slime as "soil".) 2: Make all storages "sweep only". (Don't sweep slime biomes, unless you have built a chlorine containment area.) Stop trying to "Tidy the world". 3: Water-locks, atmo-suits and hand-sanitizers where they have to enter and exit a "working slime biome". (Isolate the germs.) 4: Door at the entrance, with restricted access. Only allow "Diggers" and "Builders", no "Supply" or "Tidy" or "Store" people in there. (That will stop them from taking things out of there, until you need them to.) 5: Build a pump at the bottom and have it pump directly to a "cube" of deodorizers, where they can be tended by a normal dupe. (Preferably where a set of active buddy-plants are sitting. As opposed to trying to build a "wall of deodorizers" within the germ-filled room.) Bonus for building deodorizers on automated doors that open to drop the slime-covered clay onto the floor, out of reach, in a chlorine-pit. Another bonus if you use an auto-sweeper to fill them with sand, instead of a dupe. 6: Get rid of all things that use Algae as material. Which is also in slime biomes. That makes dupes WANT to go in there and grab algae, or swipe some on the way out, after they are covered in slime-germs. (Again, no need for the materials, then they won't get cross-contaminated.) 7: Mine EVERY reachable non-slime material first and "sweep it up". Then tackle what you couldn't reach, AND the slime, with the considerations above. 8: Make a few curative tablets before you start. A few is all you would even need, per biome. Like I said, it isn't that big of a deal anymore. 9: In total desperation, there is a mod for that... Makes it totally inert, I believe. 10: Stop trying to "Mine the world". (Especially the slime-world.) You can "reach", most of what you need, from every biome, without touching even ONE single slime block! Chill the biome and kill the germs with a steam-turbine heat deletion setup. Or, on the reverse, heat it up with steam and turn all the slime to dirt. (Since you don't NEED the slime. But, honestly, the last thing you want is MORE heat in the world.) The ONLY thing you might NEED from the biomes is gold-amalgam. Honestly not needed much, once you reach the surface. Which then changes the NEED of a slime biome to "nothing". They make nice heat-stabilizers, since they are a cooler biome than most of the others, minus the ice-biomes. The agricultural update (the one prior to outbreak) and right before that are the versions I played the heck out of. I am super excited to try this and see if it works. doubledgedboard
I can't believe it... I had to put steam in "Offline Mode" because one of Steam's worst "features" is that you literally cannot disable automatic updates for a game. but... behold! Thanks again!
