Really? Ok, it is only wikipedia knowledge! So there is no proof...but the article states:

Let's say, if they can be tricked with this they are as dumb as they look....^^

Merm-vision is blurry, and merms use scent more then sight, lets just say that I haven't cleaned my Merm hood in a while....
