The statues in the Archives are identical to the decayed/grown over statues in the Atrium, both of which show their proper appearance.

Then what this?

When it comes to their overuse of the fuel I don't think it just happened instantly. Just like a drug user- their bodies slowly change/deteriorate untill they die.

I doubt that one moment Ancients were walking through their home and the next moment they started throwing up nightmare fuel. Idk it just makes sense to me that their apperance changed due to the fuel and only some time later they became Terrorbeaks.

This looks like a mural depiction of the statues/their actual bodies.
Human murals usually weren't 100% exact and sometimes came of as rather abstract, at least that what I'm getting here.

Or maybe this was their appearance halfway through, then.
We know now that they used both Lunar and Shadow magic in conjunction for a while before sealing away the moon's energy, which led to their OD of the fuel. Perhaps one of these is their forms when both were in use.
A sort of 3 form evolution line if you will.

The Constant has been established as a massive web of sorts, with branching paths, all on top of each other. It is likely the florid postern merged many realities together, hence the skeletons littered throughout. Someone made it to the moon, perishing shortly after.

I think there is a way simpler explanation for that. They didnt make it to the moon, they just got to Lunar Island before the player (and died to Salamanders).

Whichever the case, it just seems more of a gameplay element than deep lore. Otherwise Bath Bombs would be too unintuitive (which a simple tile may not help a lot, but I digress).

See? This is exactly what I meant in the op. Because of 1 decorative item in the Archives we now have to speculate about the lore while also wondering if that wasn't an oversight on Klei's part. After all the murals and Atrium were introduced like 4 years ago, I doubt that Klei had Archives and Ancients worshiping Alter in mind back then.

Which is why it'd be nice to get some sort of update/confirmation/follow up when it comes to those old/outdated things.

God didnt make the earth lore consistent.

Yikes well now we're going to start arguing about whether or not early humans were designed by a dev team that one would hope are doing their best to keep their story consistent. Just because random cavemen depicted themselves differently doesn't mean that it's a smart decision for someone to make when designing their own ancient civilization. It makes things very confusing and inconsistent for someone trying to piece together a comprehensive plot, which we have been heavily led to believe exists.
