Because psychologically that's what humans expect Also dupes still have a need for sleep in space. If you are traveling between planets, then there will most likely only be "day". It looks like duplicants are just like humans, they need some sleep to function. There is no "night" in space and if you could place solar collectors outside the command module they would work 100% of the time. Also the solar power module works during "nights".
