Hunting down an elusive Niobium volcano

Recommended Posts

I was wondering why there was no discussion about the Niobium volcano (now that several of us managed to visit the planetoid). There are seeds that do not spawn one but as @KonfigSys pointed out :

I can see that niobium volcano is to be generated 100% of the time. I do not understand why some complain that it is 50% chance if the volcano is generated.

Being  very eager playing ONI the last few weeks, I revisited some of my older map seeds and started testing. There were some of early alpha swamp, some of early access swamp and some of terra. Using debug I saw which seeds didn't have a volcano and regenerated these worlds to see if it is still happening. Out of 18 seeds, 6 did not have a niobium volcano and 1 of these 6 didn't originally have but after an (unknown which) update, now it has a volcano. *data below

Spoiler

Steps: Date of originally generated world. I opened(revisited) the very first save after generating the map (I use different save points so the originally generated map was clean). On December 10 or 11 there was the update to add terra starting map. I recreated seeds before terra start update and the ones of terra without a volcano.

I also found out that whichever starting biome was generated it did not matter to the creation of magma planetoid

I think swamp now has a default "SWMP-C-" at the beginning while terra has "SNDST-C-". I don't know why some seeds pre-terra have different start than others..

Did you find any seeds without niobium volcano?

Can this volcano be "wrangled" and anchored to every world generated?

Happy volcano hunting!

Great job of getting all these stats out, Sakura_sk

I consider we need to get an answer from Klei. It is interesting as niobium volcano is something valuable to hunt for IMHO. It looks like from your stats that it is 30% chance of not getting the volcano generated. There are no POIs that could overlap\override the volcano generation (unless it overlaps itself).

Clearly the game is at the early stage and these far away asteroids are likely to be changed anyway. The question to the players is if they really want it to be 100% or they would like to have a chance to have (or not have) it? It is not a simple question as when you know it is 100% there you do not have a joy discovering it.

I think "joy of discovering it" is one thing (possibly searching to more than one magma planetoids) but it is completely different "if" it exist. It's like early days of ONI with no guaranteed renewable source of water. Not having a volcano in magma planet feels more like a bug compared to the base game logic. We'll wait and see ...:D bug or feature?

Has no niobium volcanoes listed on space map and I wasn't able to find any (no neurtonium beds).

Other notes:

Oozito constantly ends up with some magma in other biomes. Taking into accounts that it only has 3 separate sections, one of the non-magma biomes might end up roasted. This specific seed has a fair bit of magma in one of non-magma biomes, enough for all nearby drecos to go extinct on this rock. It also has surprisingly high amount of sand inside of a magma biome (it's probably going to melt). One neutronium 'bed' of a tungsten volcano (it has 3) made a breach between dreko and slime biomes: there is missing abbysalite.image.thumb.png.64a81cf60dd1c3219d47524202f89ecb.png

Topiariol has some weird protrusion on top that doesn't look right, it involve neutronium reaching to the sky (a hole from crashed module spawned wrong?).

This probably also needs fixing:

The niobium spawn rate is probably because of the very small map width, with it getting aborted if it tries to spawn into the left/right most tiles.

This one might be merely because of the POI (and therefore hard to fix). But another person showed a similar misalignment of border tiles between an ice/caustic biome, so I think there is some problem.

it sounds like the right explanation.

It happened to me in a vanilla game. The seed did not have wolframite (Iceberg start). I went to the space and did not find it there (I had hopes till the last planet was explored). So I had to use niobium for high-temp buildings. The main problem was doors for oil refining. I had to make it out of steel and it was very difficult to maintain the temperature range (it is much easier with wolframite as it has low temperature propagation).
