Limit for items on steam

Recommended Posts

Hi, I was scrolling through my items and remembered something mentioned in one of the topics:image.thumb.png.df377fceec2b458323fca06170b146a4.png

The first part is what concerns me. I would absolutely love to collect all items in game. I'm currently waiting for the next big sale to buy as all the bundles and sets available in in-game store. However, if the item limit exists, I'd be forced to sell/unravel some of the items.
Is this real? Or am I worried for nothing?
Thanks.

The amount of total DST visual items you can have is 3000, not a easy number to reach unless you were doing intense grinding and skin buying, and that is if you keep all the duplicates. While there is a lot of different skins with abundent variations, the number of unique skins is nowhere near a 3000. I currently have ~1200 unique items, and I have been collecting form a long time. In short, yes there is a limit, but unless you mega hoard everything and keep all duplicates, the you won't reach the limit with unique items.

On another note, IIRC the reason there is a limit in the first place is that the steam servers is what keeps track of what items you have/don't have so you can't just give yourself all the items. This is the same reason you can't use dlc characters or any skins while offline, because the game needs to actually register with a seperate server that you own that particular skin. While certinly oblong and backendy, this process is nesscary so that you can't gain every skin whenever ypu want and klei can keep the game servers active with skin money.

Nah, the reason there's a limit it just that we never thought anyone would get close to that many items when we started, and we haven't gotten around to fixing it because it has never been the highest priority. That'll have to change sooner or later though.

Steam doesn't store what you own, that's stored on Klei's servers. Instead steam asks us what you own periodically and we tell them so they can display it in your steam inventory. The docs are public now if anyone's interested: https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/features/inventory/economy - they're also way more accurate and detailed than when I started. :)

The code to fix it isn't _too_ difficult, but the testing would have to be EXTENSIVE as obviously we do not take changes that could mess up people's inventories lightly.

Just a matter of picking which new features / bug fixes will give the most benefit for the most people. So far the item limit hasn't affected too many people, and it's easily avoided once people know about it. If people start being unable to maintain their item collections because of the limit that'll be a different story!

Unfortunately this is not true anymore. I spoke with PeterA about this and there were some updates on the information stored for each drop. Now each item logs a history of previous owners and that increases the 'data weight' of items that went over the marketplace. PeterA also told me about said 1MB limit after a bit of research.

Well, I'm the guy in the original post and both my main account and my pack mule are over the limit.
My main account lists 2400 items (not 3000 because alot of them came from the marketplace) while my pack mule lists 2060 items (because all of the items stored in there have one additional previous owner which is my main account).

Both accounts probably actually have alot more items than the numbers shown.
Sometimes I just can't hop in a game and play the DLC characters or find some of my elegants not shown in the character creation even with a designated pack mule which needs 5€ a year spent on steam games to be able to keep trading items.
