A look at my garbage second base

Recommended Posts

First I want to apologize for my last post, I should have made it more clear that I was showing how bad my first base is. (I wasn't actually bragging too)

But anyway I thought I'd look at my second base and see what's improved.5d3ba7438942b_Screenshot(144).thumb.png.a68c5357f6d95a4daadbb176b784f1e8.png

This time I have a simple bathroom loop, which is a good improvement. (Although there should be more toilets) 5d3ba83f0e097_Screenshot(145).thumb.png.3cd8eff377c7926afbd6bac17bfcc2a7.png

It looks like I was having a big slimelung problem that I desperately tried to rectify with disinfecting and sick bays.

I was really bad at managing gasses and relied too much on Algae Terrariums as demonstrated by the above screenshot.5d3ba9429fef7_Screenshot(148).thumb.png.f52ace0ee283bd9ec1c17ba43b1b3ced.png

This is getting pretty long, so I'll cover the last major issue: power. Wires were constantly breaking and my way of fixing it was putting !! priority on wires that break.

Thanks for bothering to read this! Tell me what else you notice about this base, or whatever. Make sure to like the comment below that's really clever. (I really tried to make this much higher quality than my other posts, I hope it shows!)

Its after midnight, my real PC died this afternoon (fried by lightning thru my cable modem connection), and I am using a tiny keyboard on a PC that can't game that I borrowed from a friend.

I can not game, so I must scream.

Where to begin?  This isn't base porn; its more like a base snuff-film.

Power...you shouldn't be overloading anything, you have too much load on your grid.  You need to break your one "big" grid up into separate grids that won't exceed a 1K load.  But first, you need to simplify your power consumers:

You don't need 3 micro mushers.  Only 1.  And stop making mush bars.  Never make mush bars unless you are starving in-between plant or critter harvests.  And if that happens, plant\ranch more to NEVER eat mush bars.  I haven't made a mush bar since my 1st base.  Go mealwood and eat it raw early game.

You don't need so many terrariums and oxygen diffusers.  Go with one or the other.  Maybe go with just terrariums until you get power under control, but remember that they require Dupes maintaining them and your terrarium farm at the top of the base is as far from water as possible.

You don't need 3 research stations.  At most 1 research station and one super computer so that at most you only have 2 dupes doing research at any given moment.

I'm guessing you have some farty dupes based on the natural gas I see.  Stay away from farty dupes; that is a neg trait for experienced players who want a challenge.

You don't seem to be aware of the room overlay or the bonuses to morale a room gives the dupes (i think you just have the one bedroom in the bottom that may give a bonus and the bathroom).  Click on the room overlay and look at the descriptions to see what you need to get the bonuses.

About germs:

Howto avoid germs will take too long to type on this keyboard...do a search on how to avoid and handle them

This is mostly for Food Poisoning prevention:  I consider dupes disinfecting everything as a waste of time.  I set my disinfect to 1 germ (I know this triggers the dupes to disinfect with the slightest sign of germs) but I disable disinfect on most things that get germy normally (bathroom stuff, compost, deoderizers).  What this does is prevents dupes disinfecting everything and just doing the animation when normal stuff gets dirty.  Stuff that when it gets dirty, you know a dupe is spreading it around.  That is when I pause and check my dupes for germs to see who is spreading them around.  Then I direct them to wash their hands and I can continue from this interruption.

On your next base, try to have the stuff you need near the stuff that needs it so your dupes run around less and get more accomplished faster.

There is so much more to say, but its late, others can contribute minus the snark, and you can maybe watch some youtubers like Grind This Game to learn more.

First germs. Don't dig into slim until u have mechanized airlocks and deodorizers. Pick where u r going to go into the slime biome. Build 2 air locks with a 1 tile gape in-between them and only 2 tiles high. Put a deodorizer in between them and one right after the door. This will keep PO2 out of your base. Than get a buddy bud and plant it right next to the door inside your base. This will prevent slime lung becuase they release flora scents which counts as a germ and only one germ can live on a tile at a time. Secondly power. IMO nerer build coal gens without a smart battery. Just use the rock crusher to get the metal. It will save u so much coal and stop alot of excess heat and carbon. Than after your power needs grow start building transformers. The 1000 watt transformer will help prevent early circuits from blowing. Once u get alot of refined metal u can run 2 1000watt transformers together on the low side to make a 2 KW transformer. As for O2 just use the deoxidizer and dig all your algie out of the starting biome. Keep an eye on it and start building your electilizer set up before u run out. Other than that just keep playing and learn that's one of the best parts about the game.

Use decor and room overlay.
Your portal could be used as Mess hall / great hall.
Place storage containers a bit off, because dupes collect - decor each time they walk by (easy to prevent).
Use deodorizers. Place food in a co² pocket.
^^ Have phun

Sweep bottles of pw - they make polluted oxygen in base.

Open room with algea terrariums and make airflow tiles - oxygen will start to naturally spread through base.

Remove duplicate machinse - research station, microbe musher - when multiple dupse works pn this it rakes much more power at the same time which will break cables.

Those are two things i would start with.

After build deodorizers in base and wait some cycles to clear the air and problen solved. ;)

While this is good advice in general I wouldn't be too cautious with the slime biome.  Slimelung is such a minor nuisance at this point that you can mostly just ignore it.  I've reached the point where I just tear up entire slime biomes early game and maybe one of my dupes gets sick for 3 cycles.  I do put the buddy bud plants and deodorizer down but you really don't have to be careful how much you dig.  It is best if you can dig in a way that the slime falls into water so it doesn't do anything when you can.  If the slime does hit the ground make sure to get it into a storage container in some water or polluted water right away.  It isn't rare for me to have destroyed an entire slime biome by cycle 25 or so because the germs are just not a big deal anymore.
