Jungle balance

Recommended Posts

The jungle is a mess mainly because of 2 participators 1 doesn't do its job well enough and the other is so powerful it can tear through your jungle and you in seconds these 2 creatures are rabid beetles and spider monkeys

Spider monkeys

One of the many strange creatures in the jungle is the spider monkey which at first glance seem terrifying, but there not threatening at all compared to everything else in the jungle they don't defend each other, and easily go extinct without the players knowledge due to everyone's favorite rabid beetles, and their lack of care for their brethren. Luckily klei seems to be adding baby spider monkeys, and hopefully herd instincts so they defend each other when 10 rabid beetles slowly kill them off.

Rabid beetles

So if you have made it to humid you've seen rabid beetles there not much of a problem if you never enter the jungle, but due to the fact Aporkalypse is a thing you now have to enter the jungle if you don't want the end of the world to happen. Whats wrong with them well its pretty obvious there really destructive, and wipe out everything they see there not kiteable in numbers so you have to run or bring bug b gone which if you already had a humid season the beetles will be roaming around either killing flytraps or you, and since they never despawn you will have take care of them the rabid beetle population or it will keep increasing to an unstoppable number. What should Klei while I don't think a direct nerf is needed I think they should just die out after lush starts, turn into exotic flowers to continue the glowfly cycle or flytraps should be able to one shot them as a predator maybe flytraps become inactive/hibernate during humid to hide from their prime and then hunt them down in lush when the plants are at their strongest, rabid beetles would slowly be hunted down by flytraps, and maybe focus on rabid beetles. Also why don't they die in the poison jungle I know it would make them really easy to kill, but they should at least avoid it.

Don't really know how well these would play out in game, but I think it would bring a little life into the jungle instead of a insane breeding pit where creatures try to constantly repopulate before rabid beetles make them extinct.

P.S. screw rabid beetles

I have fundamental problems with both mobs but from different reasons:

- Spider Monkeys: They aren't interesting creatures at all IMO. Forge reskin from Boarillas, nothing attractive nor cool nor new about them. From a design point, they are the weakest mobs in Hamlet so far. And to top it of, they have 0 herd mentality.. It's like this..

"I'm dying here bro.. help me... pls"

"Nah.. i'm just gonna keep making more silk trees brah.. Good luck to ya!"

IMO they don't make any sense and kinda stand out in a bad way in Hamlet. I hope the devs can at least change their spawn method, cuz they die out fairly quick. Maybe they could spawn from the trees instead of multiplying from a clone?

- Rabid Beetles. The fact that they take over their habitat and completely destroy it... even if you haven't even touched that section of the map before, it's completely bonkers IMO. I mean.. from an economical stand point... ka-ching yay! but their spawn numbers are just completely unbalanced, not even spider infestations get that aggressive that fast. Not only they completely destroy everything, but the current version/build of the game cannot handle their numbers. I've experienced and continue to experience frame drops that vary from 30 to 14fps. Let's be frank here, the game cannot handle well so many little bugs at the same and run smoothly after day 60.

most of the lags are caused by the old engine not being spiffy enough as DST engine
(even my 6th gen HQ processor with 24 gigs of ram is not enough)

that's why they are bringing QOLs from DST so to enhance the game to the modern DST experience and then start adding new stuff.

as for rabid beetle themselves, I have fought hords upon hords of different type of enemies as Wigfrid generally receiving quite a boon from all this (health and sanity and drops)

but these guys.

I lost 2 tin suits and 1 battle spear and 1 halberd fighting all of these nearby the gas jungle biome (was trying to get to the ruins) and even then these guys do not stop bothering me,

even spiders tend to have somewhat slow speed and thus can be avoided in big confrontation but not these guys.

and the worse part of it is that they give no loot (got 1 bulb and 1 chitin after killing 10).

Also their fast speed, relentless aggro and attack rate make it impossible for you to catch a breath by any means.

tbh I don't even bother fighting them.. just Bug B Gone their a_s_ses bye bye

the "economy" factor is huge rn specially cuz they reproduce so much.. I gathered more than 10 stacks of chitin (each stacks hast 10 chitin) when I was going for to the aporkalypse calendar.. that's insane money... one chitin gives u 3 oincs and it's not restricted to a daily sell... BUT in that area I have no monkeys anymore, no snaptooth plants.. nothing...

if you fight them u loose so much time and energy and armor when it's clearly not worth...  60 precious hp gas of nauseating rip .. I love it.. but for real... the devs need to adjust the rabid beetles numbers...

I might have an older version so that is why I'm getting less drops but drops or not, massive infestation of anything that kills everything is crazy.

I personally feel rabid beetles might play a bigger role then just being a massive hoard of bugs that are gonna whip everything to death.

I mean glowflies don't have enemies except for pogs which are not jungle residents and Harambes are hardly a threat so why go Rabid?

I think our RABID need for the beetles to stop overpopulating would be fixed if they died naturally every 5-6 days without drops or if they only spawned in groups of 5 at most. 40 rabid beetles are way too much, they even eat through abi, who is able to destroy spider infestations.

That would be way too hard of a nerf tbh... don't forget they are a nice challenge.. but when u have to deal with more than 200 in a zone you havent been before.. then that's a bit of a problem ... 40 is a very manageable number with bug b gone tbh
