The new critter Sensor

Recommended Posts

seems way underwhelming? pointless even?

I'm not sure what i'm missing. I have a 4x24 hatch pen. first the sensor keeps getting reset to 0 on load which is a huge pain. Then when it's active, the sweeper arm sweeps ALL the eggs from the stable. Even automation doesn't help as the arm keeps sweeping ALL the eggs whenever it's active. I thought it'd be easy to fix by just sweeping all the eggs and then dropping an extra egg afterwards but the moment a critter lays a new egg, the whole process repeats. Besides, the sweeper arm usually drops the lowest incubation % egg in the pen which never gets a chance to hatch before a new egg is laid.

I tried working with multiple sensors but I'm not really good with automation so it didn't work out. Atm i'm using the dropped meat as an indication for number of critters and using the continuous incubators (which are aweome!).

How do I make the critter sensor work?

Make a separate room for dropping eggs with auto wrangling

yup that's my current solution. But I fail to see the point of critter sensor when sensing with dropped meat is way preferable since I have to haul it out anyway.

use the Critter sensor not in the stable but in the room where you are hatching the eggs to keep only one egg at a time dropped

also use the Critter sensor in the main staple to lock the doors leading to the egg drop chamber that way Duke can only go in to Wrangle baby Critters when the stable is lacking in critter numbers

You could use the sensor to instead tell it where to send the eggs couldn't you?

I already do that with the dropped meat which imo is way more reliable. It just seems a forceful way to make the sensor of any use.

what I'm doing right now is dropping an egg in a separate room for every meat dropped. then the dupes go in to autowrangle when the babies grow up. The extra eggs get dropped in water so I have steady supply of meat.

Your way works but it seems like extra bit of work for the same gain. I guess it Klei gave us separate critter and egg sensors, the process could get better. But I was really happy to see the critter sensor the day preview released and it turned out to be rather disappointing. I'm love the other stuff (continuous incubators etc) but the critter sensor could've been better.

I was messing around with this last night. I was using the Critter Sensor mod that has been out for a while, but I assume it functions similarly (Have not gotten on beta branch yet).

The way I solved it was having 2 auto sweepers. One is always active. It puts one egg into a storage container with a limit of 1Kg (because if you have 2Kg, the weight of one egg, it puts 2 eggs in, making it 4Kg/2Kg... ugh). Then you have another autosweeper that can't see the eggs but can see the container. If the critter/eggs sensor activates, it pulses the bottom

Really, it would just be nice to limit the sweeper to pick up only one item, or allow the loader to only accept one item.. as it is the critter sensor kinda sucks.

If you want to incubate eggs in your farm with automation you need an incubator. Just connect it to the sensor with a NOT gate. Problem solved. And the critter sensor reset on reloads is fixed in the newest hotfix.

Okay that makes a lot of sense, I hadn't thought about that. And I just saw the latest update, seems like I was getting upset over no reason.

Thanks!

And thanks @Neotuck for the ideas, I really should be searching the forums before starting a new thread :D
