Oil and Piping Question

Recommended Posts

I've come across some oil in my latest build of the game and am getting ready to pipe the oil from its source to a giant vat/pool in my base and I'm sure wandering what kind of pipes I should use. I know the oil is hot and if I remember correctly from when I played a long time ago it doesnt really cool too easily which may be a problem for things surrounding it, especially during travel in the base through the pipes. The wording in the description of the pipes is slightly confusing and not straight forward enough so I'm just trying to make sure I get what they're doing.

Liquid Pipes: Pumps liquid as is from one end to another.

Insulated Liquid Pipes: Keeps the liquid temperature contained in the pipes

Radiant Liquid Pipes: Disperses the liquid temperature outside the pipes as traveling.

Based on these thoughts I'm thinking I should use Insulated Pipes correct?

Bonus:

Also I made my pool walls out of granite because of their strength but did it with regular tiles. Now I'm thinking I should quickly change these to Insulated Tiles made of granite because of the heat from the oil getting out. Good idea or suggestion for change?

Yes.

Use insulated pipes only inside your base/where you don't want heat to leak out/if you don't want the liquid or gas to change temperature.

On the other hand, radiant pipes will speed up heat transfer between the liquid/gas and its environment (useful to make cooling loops), and normal pipes are just plain normal pipes. They don't insulate nor conduct heat well, but they are very cheap.

I suggest you to use igneous rock instead of granite for insulating things, because of its lower thermal conductivity and higher heat capacity.

For your reservoir, the simplest way to keep hot stuff from heating your base up is simply by leaving it where it is. Just dig your pool in the oil biome, stick a pump in it and pump the oil directly to your refinery. This way, you will save materials and space and you will keep your base from potentially overheating (even insulated tiles will let some heat pass through them).

Cool. That's for confirming my clarification. Now I understand it better.

Well I was going to do that for the Insulated Pipes but because the Granite has a higher "hardness" to it, that's why Im thinking of making the mesh walls of the reservoir with it because it will be able to hold more liquid without cracking with just 1 layer.

And I actually thought about doing that, it's a good idea. It's just that the oil is a little far from my base and covered in a bunch of chlorine pocket areas. And I'm not even tempted experience nor do I know how to deal with the chlorine or what to do with it. So I figured building around it would be better. Plus less travel for my dupes to the oil if its close to my base. But you are right. the heat is an issue and wont exactly disappear that easily. That was one of the main issues in my last build a couple updates back. The heat it caused in my base even when using multiple venting solutions. Also maneuvering so many different pipes around my base is kind of a hassle...

None of the gases require special handling really apart from pollutes oxygen with slime lung in it.

Chlorine will just sink like carbon dioxide. The only thing you have to worry about is hot gases leeching heat where you don't want it or suffocating plans/dupes in your main base

Ah okay. The reason I said that is because I figured I have to do something with it because it's different from the other gases as far as I know. Because with like Carbon dioxide I can get rid of it with the carbon skimmer. With hydrogen I can get rid of that to or actually use it as a power source and produce it. With natural gas as well that's a power source I can renewably produce, etc. But with chlorine as far as I know the only think i can use it for is hand sanitizer and I'm not sure what effectively scrubs it from the air or if it can be renewably produced

I like to stick the excess chlorine i have in a gas storage. One or two of them are an easy solution for most chlorine pockets on your way. I also use it to create a sterile atmosphere in slime biomes. If you pump it in there any slime you dig out wil be disinfected from slimelung. As an added bonus whenever your dupes enter you will have some chlorine leaking into the base instead of polluted o2 carrying disease so you won't need a massive airlock.
