Doctor H. Derp
I can't draw people to save my pity life :CThere's a lot of things working in the image. Take for example the face: Looks just fine, the linework feels like it belongs with everything else in the image, as do the color choices, lighting/shading and whatnot.Where it seems things start to breakdown is body proportions and character posing.Body proportions: Like so many others, I see you struggle with foreshortened angles, and that struggle is causing those arms of her's to look wonky. The forearms look much too short when compared to her upper arms. Her left arm(audience right side) looks longer than her right arm(audience left side) because of your posing choice of having it loop around the knees like it does. Also the sleeves conflict. The sleeve of her right arm(audience left) looks skin tight, clasping around the wrist. The sleeve of her left(audience right) looks loose, kind of like Mabel from gravity falls, well at least in this outfit. Also her left hand(audience right) doesn't quite match up with her right(audience left), especially since you tried to sneak that thumb in her left hand(audience right).Posing: That position she's in looks exceptionally uncomfortable. Try mimicking her pose and writing, if you can, get a like a knee-high table place it down, sit next to it like the character up in that illustration and try writing. I'd be surprised if most people could comfortably do it for 2 minutes. Don't even need the campfire, it's unnecessary information. We'll get that there's some light source off from stage right. In fact, because you included the campfire, the pose the character's in feels like a scrunched because you need to save as much room as possible to keep her centered and fit everything in. Looking at the way you made the ovals to indicate the planes of the top of the tree stump compared to the inkwell, they conflict. Inkwell looks like it's on a nearly level surface while the tree stump looks like it was cut and an angle. Also, where's all the writing/sketching on the piece of parchment? xDThat all said, I think the 3 strongest things in this image is are your color choices, it's absolutely beautiful use of warm yellows and cool blues. I actually like the thick-bold lines, makes it look very digitally-painted, which can be a good or bad thing depending, but I considering it more of a stylistic thing. I try to make my digital linework look like I got out the micron pens and did a bunch of line-weight variation, but it's whatever floats your boat honestly. I love your bold use of blacks throughout this image, it really accentuates the blue, I like how you had the good sense to imply a lot of detail instead of full rendering the background which focuses the attention on the central character and you really did put a lot of love into the face of the character. It is truly stunning.Keep it up the hardwork and dedication, you've got a lot of potential.Hope this was useful as well as it was encouraging. Sadly, listing the errors won't help me since I see them myself annoyingly clear I just don't have time to re-draw everything I see wrong, and it's kind of an endless cycle, because new problems always come each after another. I want to say with this, that this is the worse piece you could pick up for the critique. But thank you anyway. Doctor H. Derp
Thank you for the critique. You're welcome.Sadly, listing the errors won't help me since I see them myself annoyingly clear I just don't have time to re-draw everything I see wrong, and it's kind of an endless cycle, because new problems always come each after another.Such is the lot of an artist. We're visual problem-solvers.This picture was about 20 mins made in my work break, this is why I didn't even post it on my dA, and I regret posting it here too.Regret? Why? Look, I'm not here to cut you down, and you shouldn't be ashamed that you see flaws in an art piece. Think of it this way: If we were "perfect" artists, all our works would look exactly like a photograph. What fun is that? I like cartoons too much to devote the time and energy to photo-realism.I look at my art pieces and all I ever see are the flaws. The key, I feel, is to be able to enjoy your own artwork despite the shortcomings you see.I want to say with this, that this is the worse piece you could pick up for the critique. But thank you anyway. I will take my time to practice.Have a little more confidence in yourself. Like I said, you have potential and a lot of it, especially if this is the "worst I could pick", and don't shy too far away from speed painting.
