ONI is also a Mining Game, why don't we have Rail Tracks and Carts for Dup Transport?

Recommended Posts

Well we have iron and steel in the game, and a very large map with different biomes, we need faster transport asides from the hi-tech dup transport we already have.

Looks great to watch your dups riding rail carts for faster travel.

A railway system would be a great addition to the game including rail track systems, like another automation. Like one rail cart will need to stop via automation when another one passes by. Or to prevent a rail cart from going through that route.

It shouldn't only travel straight line, maybe railroad tracks can run through slight to moderate upward or downward slopes to reach higher or lower grounds.

Then dups can have accidents resulting to injury if their carts collide to one another or collision to snow/sand or accident from flood when riding a cart.

Maybe the low tech carts are manually powered by a riding duplicant by pumping an engine via a lever or sort, which gradually stressess the dup and gets hungry faster. More stress when going through an incline.

Then there would be a research to upgrade your railroad tracks to electricity-powered tracks by running wires above it; or maybe it will be the rail carts to have coal engine or battery-powered carts which need to be recharged on rail cart battery charging stations.

Then maybe have another research so you can also build storage carts as rail cart extension for materials transportation when a duplicant is riding the rail cart instead of duplicants hauling them manually.

Lots of possibility!

Yep, Yunru is right:

And as for duplicant traveling network:

But one good idea that could be applied to existing technology is adding switches and sensors (automation) to the conveyor rails, just like what was added to the water/gas pipes. This could allow us to use the rail system as an item sorter!

I agree that some mid-game conveniences are needed.

A more primitive elevator/bucket, slower then a tube but powered and faster then climbing a ladder, say the same speed as a fire-pole can go down

A lateral rail with a cart that has to be built seperatly, two versions one cargo, on passenger, both are battery powered and need to charge.

Yep, I totally agree. Transit Tubes are really fast but eat a lot of power so building it is suitable for late game, where there's nothing much to do as your colony here would be pretty much stable and every nearby biome must have already been dug out.

Early game and Mid game is almost all where the fun is when you are exploring the map and starting to tap those geysers, etc.

I would love to see Dups in some sort of vehicle system, and railcarts seem a nice addition to the theme of the game.

I'm also thinking of rail system where Duplicants can stop to any location along the track where he needs to go to. It is more like how exosuit points work. Yeah, if based on exosuit points and docks, railcarts can be easily introduced to the game and extend its features in the future.

This brings to mind the minecart system in dwarf fortress.. in a good way. It could lead to all sorts of FUN. ;)

I wouldn't mind seeing them implemented as an early to mid game system, perhaps built by engineers and operated by groundskeepers and/or gophers. Dupes could push off and ride on them, possibly navigating switches, on flat or downhill sections for faster transportation and pushing them uphill at a slower rate that balances the extra weight they'd be able to move vs carrying.

Maybe a mid-tier tech to allow a powered section of track to give a short term speed boost to go uphill faster.
