Lacking a way to drop items

Recommended Posts

Currently we have the auto sweeper to pick items up, but no way to drop them again short of making their storage invalid/disappear.

Having a machine to drop items in the world would allow for some interesting world interactions. Off the top of my head, it would allow automation of magma volcanoes as metal refineries.

Dont Auto Sweepers also 'deliver' stuff from a receptacle to the machine/farm/storage in context ?

Yes...?

Which does absolutely nothing from dropping them into the world itself.

Like onto a volcano for processing. Or some other creative use (of which there'll undoubtedly be more).

Critter eggs also come to mind. I'd love to be able to move them above my current room, drop it, and then put a timer in play that will drop the egg when I want it (presumably just before it hatches, but you know. Builds. Specifics to be sorted later.)

The solution to your example would be to put a storage thing made of something that wont melt into the volcano, have the items deposited into the storage, they will melt and drop out of the storage.

I do not know what storage it uses, but tungsten and obsidian are good choices

Or we could you know actually think about what would be simple and intuitive in game and then ask the developers to implement that.

Rather then trying to make up cludgy and narrowly tailored work around as if the game were finalized and the OP were a newb who needed our expert advise.

actually we could do both, ask the devs to implement sensible changes while notifying the public of

so that they can keep playing while we wait for the good stuffs to be implemented, ya know, like we've been doing all along with spom builds and oil boilers.  There should be a way via normal in game methods to convert oil to nat gas but in the mean time we have "repeats your quote again" and while they may not work 100% without fail, I think we are doing pretty good in both departments.  Just sayin.

If this were a help forum I would agree, I think we should focus only on what changes we feel should be made to the game.  I say don't bring up your workarounds unless your actually arguing that they eliminate the need for any change to the game, I don't think anyone is saying the workarounds are adequate in this situation so I don't consider them to be useful input.

My recommendation, make the 'critter drop off' arrow building available at the start of the game, put every solid object in the menu, make the arrow actually hang one tile over from the location it's placed, like a bottle Emptier, give it all the bottle emptier settings and options.  Problem solved we have a universal means of dropping items into the world.

I don't know if that was pointed towards my suggestion or not?

You know sweepers will drop items if their power is  interrupted mid sweep

Just make an automation ticker to turn it off every 3 seconds and it will drop any item on the floor

Oh that reminds me: have it plug into the transport system, rather than having to go Rail -> Storage -> Sweeper -> Dropper

I was thinking of:

Rail > Receptacle > Sweeper > Compactor

With the power being interrupted the sweeper will drop the item on the floor when it tries to load the compactor.

We did this to feed hatches before critter feeders where added to the game
