Some more questions on critters

First off do u consider smooth hatchs to be worth it? Ik I only get 75% of the mass consumed as refined metal but not having to waste a dup, energy and getting hot water on a refiner I think it's worth it. Second how do u get the puft variants? Also is it worth farming slicksters? And finally do gulp fish work? I've heard they r bugged.

smooth hatches are better than rock granulator but not as good as a metal refinery

you need one "puft prince" in a stable along with your other pufts to get variants (like how a rooster helps hens lay eggs in a chicken coop)

slicksters is an easy way to get rid of excess CO2 if you don't have enough water for carbon skimmers

I avoid taming fish, the algae food requirements are not easy to sustain

You only need one tame fish for laying eggs, when you release fish they become wild. The cost is high but you only need an inital investment of algae and some plastic for traps to relocate and make them wild.

Nah on the smooth.  The refinery is great for making heat.  Maybe if you are lucky enough to get one super early.

Slicksters don't need to be in the oil biome but their baby mechanics are based on temperature.  So they still need to be around suit temperatures.  I've got so many slicksters that my oil biome and base ran out of co2.  I've got to kill a bunch of them off.

Catch fish but never feed them.  Having them close is good.  They still lay eggs wild before they die.  You get meat from them but not too fast.

Smooth hatches suck because of metal volcanoes. Metal ore is finite, and many buildings can only be built out of ore, and not its refined counterpart. I try to refine as little copper, gold, and wolframite ore as possible for this reason. Iron seems plentiful enough to refine alot of it though.

Unless you get a lucky Smooth Hatch very early, I would say they are not worth it.  The 25% loss of mass from the Smooth Hatch is better than the Granulator for the earlier parts of the game where you only need a smidge of Refined Metal.  But as you need larger quantities to build with, it's a loss you can't really deal with.

Wolframite specifically is too limited on the map to waste on either the Granulator or Smooth Hatches.  Only ever put it through the Refinery, which preserves 100% of mass (at the cost of huge heat).
