Captive born Pufts and Slimelung

It makes sense for wild Pufts to have slimelung in their systems from exposure to the elements and whatnot.  What if captive-born Pufts were not a source of slimelung?  Or perhaps only Puft Princes, since they are already so bad at converting pO2 to slime, it would give a reason to keep them around and fed.  Or perhaps another variety with some other negative factor to balance it out.

Puft princes need to be kept around because otherwise pufts will not lay proper eggs. Think of them as Puft Roosters.

Roosters rarely lay eggs, still they are necessary for hens to lay eggs.

That is simple solution that will protect rancher to many things including slimelung and popped eardrum. Another alternative is to keep the room under 5C,
