Using Morbs to provide germless Polluted Oxygen

Recommended Posts

Lately I've been thinking about Morbs. Those cutty, slimmy critters are the only one you can "spawn" in the game thanks to Outhouse and they are an infinite source of precious oxygen.

The problem is that it comes in the form of Polluted Oxygen infected by Slimelung. I know that there are design to use them combined with Pufts for Slime (though it's really slow) and also designs to turn PO into O by Liquefacting it (but it use lots of energy).

My idea was to just cool the gas to <10°C, which shouldn't take more than a couple of Thermo Regulators, and release it as PO since Slimelung won't survive under that temperature.

So I have a couple of questions on that : As anyone ever tried such a design? Is there any downside to it besides the risk of massive Slimelung spread if you are not careful ?

If the whole colony is <10°C dups get cold quickly, even warm clothes might not be enough. Chlorine doesn't work on gas, as Steelflame said a single germ of slimelung will end the game.

Must just be my game then, I flood slimelung pockets with chlorine and it dies.

There are pros and cons to all forms of oxygen production so it will depend on what resources you have plenty of.

Deodorizers might be a good solution if you have plenty of sand and have an air pump automated with a germ sensor

That's not the solution that I wanted to discuss here, while Deodorizers is indeed a good solution I don't like that it rely on a finite resource.

So having your dupes breath cold PO? even without the slimelung breathing PO will increase stress and lower immunity

The only renewable option I know of to clean the polluted o2 is via liquification.  If you can liquify the polluted o2 then heat it, it becomes clean o2.  I use heat exchangers to transfer heat from incoming polluted o2 to the cold o2 and then thermoregulators with hydrogen with a radiator design to push the polluted o2 the rest of the way.  The heat exchanger can make them much cheaper powerwise to the point where you only need a small number of thermoregulators.   The throughput of such a system is only dependant on the size, polluted O2 input, and power you put in to the system.

On cold polluted O2: keeping the polluted O2 at that temp in your base is hard.  You can cool the incoming stuff to kill the germs, but keeping the base that cold will not be easy.  Too many things put out heat.  It could work though.  I feel like it might take as much power per dupe as a liquid o2 system.  I recommend trying to build it and see how it works.

I use morbs as my early- and mid-game solution to getting rid of loose CO2(leaks from the larder or farms or any that doesn't make it into the basement to wait for slicksters).  I have some low concentrations of germs where they are located, but spamming deodorizers and keeping the my fresh air at high pressure has made the germs a non-issue.  I also maintain caution and safe practices when messing around with the slime outside of my base to not compound the germ potential.  I can add some screenshots later when I have more time.

It seems like a perfect job for the Anti Entropy Thermo-Nullifier ;)

Aquatuners combined with Polluted Water is also great to generate cool.

I think there are solutions to cool down the base, especially if I put away from the main area the main heat sources (battery, generators, etc). What I wonder is how hard it would be to manage dups body temperature.

10 C is 50 F, which isn't too cold.  I'm not an expert on how dupe's body temperature operates, but they shouldn't get hypothermia like that in oxygen.
