Add potential for creative gameplay

Recommended Posts

This is a general suggestion for the development of ONI game-play.

Don't reduce potential for creative game-play but rather add to it.

One example of how to do it is to add more generic buildings where each one has only single function,
and avoid buildings which dictate how they can be used and allow little or no variations.

On a higher level, think of the challenges added to the game and allow for different possible solutions.

Allow players to find their own balances in the game.
Example: showers - if you need more polluted water you can add more showers, otherwise you can reduce number of showers. I don't know why showers were originally introduced, perhaps just because they shouldn't be missing in a bathroom, but it doesn't matter...

If playing with physics is one important aspect of the game, then refine it and add to it, don't neglect it, don't make it ridiculous.
Examples: adiabatic cooling and heating, vaporization heat.

Do not try to restrict how players use building blocks / buildings in the game, don't try to make them play your way.
Encourage them to play their way and be creative.
Make it more like a sandbox and less like "progress level by level until all levels are completed".

One such simple building that could really contribute to said creative builds would be a large bunsen burner and/or a hotplate. These would heat up whatever is directly above it(air or solid building tile). This would add a number of options for refining ores, crude oil, and potentially creating magma.

@TehPlayer14 I think you missed the point. It's about the number of different applications for each building. Recently released Steam Turbine is a perfect example of the problem. It was designed to use with magma, and if you want something else, you're doomed. It was fine in the preview version, but then it got nerfed in the released version for the sake of the balance. I definitely don't like such balance that cut off important possibilities. Maybe Klei should consider about game separation into challenge and sandbox modes. And nope, you can do nothing with that in the debug mode. You need a developer mode or at least a mod-builder mode (Steam Workshop).
