Early, mid, late game - milestones

  1. early game: plantation area, algae, 2 decor research, barracks, latrine
     
  2. mid game: oxydizer, generators, greenhouse, explore ice biome, partial cooling base
     
  3. late game: powerplant, smelting, water treatment (seive n cool)
     
  4. automation stage
     
  5. expansion stage

Early game is after getting latrines dug and starting mealwood.

Mid game includes your first big farms and getting all of the research done and firing up industry: self-contained bathrooms with sieve, electrolyzer, coal, hydrogen, natgas, etc.

Late game is making everything plastic and metal with tubes and auto sweepers and having your dupes live a happy life in luxury apartments.

Early game is mining for resources. Algae, coal, metal, dirt. 

Midgame is making tier one things and the pillars of society. So setting up industry and waste management. Setting up nice bedrooms and large scale farms. 

Late game is plastic and automation. Setting things up so you no longer need to do anything. Plus building big fun projects. 

I like to think of them as crises:

Crisis 1: Dupes sleep on floor: Solution BEDS
Crisis 2: Dupes have to pee: Solution OUTHOUSE
Crisis 3:  Oxylite Runs out Solution:  Algae
Crisis 4:  Water needed for Algae Solution: Hand Pump
Crisis 5: Power required Solution: Hamster Wheels and Batteries
Crisis 6: Food running out Solution: Farms and Cooking
Crisis 7: Polluted Dirt infecting Air Solution: Isolated dumping area for Polluted Dirt
Crisis 8: Germs, Solution: Wash Basins
Crisis 9: Wastewater Disposal, Solution:  Create dumping area
Crisis 10: Dupes spending too much time on the wheel Solution: Coal Power
Crisis 11: CO2 Buildup Solution: C02 Scrubber, or Algae Terrarium, or Hollow out area under your base.
Crisis 12: Circuit overloaded Solution Transformers
Crisis 13: Algae Running out Solution: Electrolyzer
Crisis 14: Dupes Getting Stressed Solution: Art, Clean dirt off floor, dining tables
Crisis 15: Out of Clean  water Solution: Water Filters
Crisis 16: Base getting too hot Solution Use Insulation and Cold Biome
Crisis 17: Coal running out Solution: Find and exploit natural Gas Geyser
Crisis 18: Dupes too hot/cold Solution: Clothing
Crisis 19: Polluted water runs out Solution: Find and exploit Steam Geyser

 

I try to keep the next crisis in mind and plan accordingly.

Typically I just run a colony till it either comes to a point where I believe its stable enought to become self sufficient or I mess up horribly and kill everyone and like the comment above me I deal with the problems as they appear. Typically basic research is the first, then basic food, then power, then renewable oxygen generation and then renewable power and food (since they nerved meal-lice). 

I also tend to go out of order depending on the situation
