Being able to see gasses at a glance is great, but after a certain size the space behind the base begins to feel... empty.

Maybe it's the endless clouds of Polluted Oxygen, or maybe it's the strangeness of the Mona Duplisas, but I get the feeling that vlsually there might be some benefit to having a "wallpaper" tile behind the clouds. Nothing that'd directly obscure the gas mix, but just enough subtle tiling or patterns to fill that empty space. Different gasses could also have different opacities; maybe Oxygen is the only gas that lets you effectively see the wallpaper tiles from a distance as an indicator of a safe environment.

Different colors or use of half-colored and quarter-colored tiles could allow one to make mosaics, markers, designations or just decoration. It'd also be a nice way to increase decor and more clearly delineate between "inhabited" and "utilitarian" areas. You could even have a more visible default "mineral" background/wallpaper lurking behind the resident gasses to better differentiate biomes and areas claimed from them.

What say you? Is the gaseous canvas in need of a better backdrop, or is it fine as-is?

I don't think I'd really use wallpaper that much. The gases are important to see, but I guess one could always switch to the oxygen overlay, if needed. Personally, it would just put more work on my plate, but I think that this could be something useful and fun for a lot of people. I think that this could be some content that would be nice later, but just as detail cleaning when there isn't so much content missing. Still though, sounds like something that a lot of people would appreciate.

Gases could be invisible in front of wallpaper, and the oxygen overlay could show all gases discretely.  I already switch to the oxygen overlay sometimes expecting it to show natural gas as orange and chlorine as green - that feels intuitive.

The background does get a little ominous.  Wallpapers are a great idea.
