More uses for water, steam/hydro power?

Recommended Posts

Interestingly enough, I feel like there aren't enough uses for water with steam geysers now. You use a bunch of water off the start but then mysteriously, you almost never need it for cooking or drinking afterwards, and most of the systems end up being water neutral more or less, except for electrolyzers, but those produce so much oxygen you can't really build many without ways of using it up. I suppose crops use water as well, but there's only so much food you need to produce based on your colony size.

As an alternative to the electrolyzer, it would be nice to have steam or hydro power buildings. drinking fountains, a pool, sauna etc.

I don't know if I fully trust the way the system handles gasses condensing into liquids within vents/pipes right now. I'd like to see that interchange handled a bit more gracefully before we see steam power and dedicated steam-pumping through ventilation ducts. For example, we could have water drip out of air vents when "cooled" steam is introduced to colder air, or even deal with water blockages in ventilation ducts by adding a drip valve that T-joints into water pipes.

Basic water uses are electrolyzer and air scrubber, optional are hydrofan, lavatory, and shower. Obsolete are supercomputer, musher, and algae terrarium, but it may be a good idea to keep some sort of water well ready for a musher in case you get hit by binge eater.

That doesn't feel like too few uses for water to me, it's just that your dupes don't need to carry it around anymore.

I should have specified water consumers. Electrolyzer is one of the few that actually uses up water after early/mid game. Most of the other ones produce polluted water, which can be purified again. If you get a world with a few steam geysers, most of the time you just block them off and leave them because you can't do anything with all the water they produce. We have a number of water neutral cycles, and I think it would be great to have a couple more actual consumers to "use up" extra water.

You can keep purifying water for a while but you'll eventually run out of sand. And there's much better sink for polluted water too: plants. Mealwood may get out of fashion but is soon replaced by pincha peppers. I was very surprised how fast started my polluted water disappearing after I made a pincha pepper farm.

Do Pincha Peppers use more polluted water than Mealwood?

Also i do agree I do wish there were ore uses for fresh water, I have such an abundance of it that I am soon going to be drowning in it. I have 4 Electrolyzers, 2 CO2 Scrubbers and a small pool to keep handy for if I need to use my Mushers.
