So you need to pump in enough heat to melt that chunk of ice in one go and if you have 10000kg of ice, that's gonna take a while. Besides that the Ice and Water have their own heat transfer rate. not sure what the limiting factor is but that rate in both cases isn't that good. Jyuu Posted April 4, 2017 Share Posted April 4, 2017 Yes, i pumped in high concentrated of warm air to the ice biome and wanted to pump back in the cooler air back into my farm room. And the ice started melting real quick. Good thing i set up a filter below and thats free polluted water! But after awhile the ice stop melting. I guess its because the vent is now further from other ice. Might want to move the vent upwards next time to try it out. A huge ice item, in the tens or hundreds of thousand kg, will not change temperature appreciably. Best bet is to pump CO2 gas into the ice biome to melt and recover the cold water. Lafara Posted April 4, 2017 Share Posted April 4, 2017 umm ... storing ICE into a single lump of 20,000,000g. of course that lump of ICE need 20,000 times Heat W to 1000g lump of Ice 's I did store 12,000 kg of Ice submerge in a granite storage in 80 C water Tank. it took ~20 cycles to change Ice temperature from -24.0 C to -22.0 C (not melt yet). It is the sheer amount of mass that causes ice or water to take ages to heat compared to gas. I'd store all the ice directly near a geyser which also cools the boiling water easier. What's the purpose of cooling the water from geysers? If you store it right, it doesn't affect anything in your base. The only reason to melt ice is to get some extra water before you get to the geysers. After that, it is fast to just mine the ice away to make room for expansion.
